Leap pads

Hi Can I canvass any views of leap pads? Thinking of buying one for my 4 yr old adn don't know anyone that has one. Do kids actually use them, what do you think of them, what are the best/worst books, do they have accurate phonic sounds in them???

i personally hate them. wont buy one at all. i prefer to read to my kids than let a machine do it.

I don't like them, but it's more the cost than anything else. Ds does have electronic toy computers and stuff which he LOVES. But with the leappad you've got to pay for all the books too, some of which are £15 each!

We have one, i think we brought it for dd2. She hardely ever uses it though.

Ds on the other hand loves it, but only the bear in big blue house book.

I thought I'd hate them, but someone told me not to treat them as books as such, but more "my first playstation" . Ds1 (4) really enjoys his and he goes through phases of playing with it or ignoring it. Not kidding myself that he's learning anything from it though!

we got the baby one at xmas and tbh, its crap. Wish i had never asked dad to get it..... maybe things will change as dd gets older, she is only 10 months but wont sit still long enough

Got ds, my first leappad for xmas, looked at it maybe twice, does'nt play with it at all.

the first leap pad is crap. why make it out of paper? the first thing my ds tried to do was pull it.. how can u expect a baby to play with that it would be ruined! such a waste of money.

We have one and my 2 love it. I dont look at it as a case of me not reading it but them learning more that I always have time to teach them. DS1 uses it to sound out the words and he tries to recognise the letters. He also has a few books with games in.

My dd is 16mo and loves hers. It's part of her bedtime routine but isn't a replacement for reading a story, which we do as well. It's good for recognising animals and other objects and repeating sounds, which she likes because she can control it. She did the aeroplane noise over and over again tonight so that we could wave every time. The activity cards are very good IMO. They are expensice but there are often special offers on and you can also get them on Ebay
