worth a visit to ikea and trying each matress personally
there are some good advice re how to choose a mattress in the website too.

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 26/08/2009 08:08

thanks - our bed is not ikea. we are actually thinking maybe we should get a new bed from ikea just so we can get a matress there!

seems ridiculous but dd has an ikea mattress which we have both slept on and love.

You ought to buy your mattress and bedbase together - they work together.

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 26/08/2009 08:18

i konw but we only bought the bed 4 years ago, it is just teh mattress that is duff.

Can't you go back to the manufacturer of the bed and buy a firmer mattress from them?

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 26/08/2009 08:24

it is a silent night bed and tbh the mattress was duff within a year so i don't really want to waste more money with them.

the mattress was meant to be firm adn still is i suppose but firmly lumpy. i might try one of those foam topper things on it.

I'd be tempted to start again, tbh. I have seen various family members shell out again and again for cheaper "bits" of beds and ended up buying a very expensive bed base and mattress combo and being delighted but cross that they had wasted so much time and money in the process!

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 26/08/2009 08:32

i think you are right but i hate the waste and we do have better things to spend the money on.

Come back here in a few years when you shell out for a lovely whole new bed after forking out for bits and pieces so I can say "I told you so"

Firm mattress aren't actually supposed to be that good for your back as they don't keep it in the right alignment. That's why mattress toppers are so popular as they rejuvenate an old saggy mattress and soften the feel of a really firm one. My folks sleep on this type of polyester mattress topper and absolutely love it.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 31/08/2009 22:18

oooh they're cheaper than the memory foam ones. Do they cover up when you've got a cheapy mattress where you can feel the springs?

Also, I guess you can only use them with flat sheets not fitted? Can't see the fitted sheet stretching round the extra depth.

(Having said that, I'm tempted to buy new sheets and have a comfy night's sleep. I'm really struggling to sleep on my side cos the mattress is too firm. ld codger

If you've got the money, go for a whole memory foam mattress. We have a Tempur one and it is the most blissful thing I have ever slept on in my life. Was really pricey, though, about £1500.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 31/08/2009 22:52

Haven't got the money. That's the problem.

Was lurking and had to tell you about the best mattress I have ever had and I have had loads. It is a Sealy Posturpaedic ultra Princess ortho. It is so comfortable and I am picky!

I LOVE my mattress! I got it from John Lewis. I spent a good three quarters of an hour trying out different mattresses. I highly recommended it! Go to John Lewis and lie on a few beds and see which one makes you go ahhhhh.
I ended up with a Hypnos mattress. It's a non-turnable one.

It has a layer of lambswool mmmmmmmm! I loveit so much when I first got this mattress I made all of my mates who came round lie on it to see how good it was

Resurrecting this thread as I am looking for a mattress. What lowrib says about 'which one makes you go ahhhh'. Well, apart from the fact that it was megabucks, it was also very sinky in and soft (with about a thousand springs too). It's the organic fancy pants from Warren Evans (not real name).

My question: Ahh notwithstanding. Might a sinky in bed (v comfy for 15 mins I was on it) actually not be good for my back which can get achey and locked up?

Tell me more mattress stuff....
