Clarks white sandals. Filthy, how to clean them

DD has a pair of white sandals which are already manky and we're not even halfway through 'summer' yet. Any ideas on how I can clean them? Damp cloth is not working and am tempted to throw them in the washing machine.

Cif ?

Schmozer · 10/07/2009 14:53

Are they leather? If so try nail polish remover. Sounds bonkers, really works.

EyeballsintheSky · 10/07/2009 21:26

Ooh hello, I'd forgotten I started this

Yes, they are leather. Nail varnish remover...hmmm... Will try that, thanks

yes washing machine

EachPeachPearMum · 10/07/2009 21:41

Let us know if it works Eyeballs....

ilikeyoursleeves · 10/07/2009 21:43

I cleaned DS's toes of his Converse boots with a baby wipe, worked a total treat!

michaelbooblie · 10/07/2009 22:02

Buff away dirty marks with a nail file then

polish with trainer whitener (woman in shoe
shop recommended it when I got DDs shoes, and it works)

EyeballsintheSky · 10/07/2009 23:49

Tried the nail varnish remover and they are a little better. I think the problem with that is because they are only tiny (baby size 4) most of the strap is stitching and the rest is littered with fecking pink flowers and bumble bees Still enough white to look grey though

I thought of the whitener - used to be addicted to the stuff when I ice skated as a kid! But see above for problem with that.

Might have to try washing machine. They were only £28 . Thieving shoe shop.

Next year shoot me if I buy white sandals for her. At least pink doesn't look as manky. She'll be back in her black winter shoes at this rate.

Can you still buy whitener ...used to love the smell of that

EyeballsintheSky · 10/07/2009 23:54

I think so. I used to love the way it oozed out over the sponge...

. Sounds like polish porn...oh God, the shoe stuff not residents of the country next to the Ukraine.

My favoured technique is baby wipe to get the worst off, followed by trainer whitener. If it's really fiddly, could you put the whitener on with a little paintbrush nicked from your dc?

lilolilmanchester · 11/07/2009 00:22

Clarks will never endorse this (melts the glue apparently) but stick em in the washer. The whitener will stick better after a wash if you still need to use it.

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 11/07/2009 00:42

Eraser ~ as in pencil rubber.

I was wondering about sticking leather/suede and fabric Pepino's in the washing mahine. Am a bit cringy about the suede bit though.

nicolamumof3 · 11/07/2009 07:32

i've washed leather/suede shoes before, came out fine!

EyeballsintheSky · 11/07/2009 07:35

Well she will be wearing them today but tonight, into the washer they go! And if they get ruined she'll have to have some fake Crocs for the rest of the summer So pray for washing machine success please...

Thanks for all your suggestions

DD has a pair of Startrite ones in sensible brown but I was told they are machine washable at 30. I was a bit but when they came back filthy from the grandparents in they went and are now spotless.

EyeballsintheSky · 11/07/2009 08:06

I will report back tonight on whether we have spotless shoes or a clump of leather and melted glue

Me too!

My DD is 3 and the worst shoe vandal I have ever met. She scuffs the toes of everything within seconds. I now have a tube of white pink and blue acrylic paints, and some neutral shoe polish. First, into the washer on 30 with some persil (but not fabric conditioner as it stops the paint sticking)
Then once they are dried, I mix the right colour of paint for the shoe, give the scuffed toes a couple of coats for good coverage, mix some very dilute white paint for the stitching, wipe off any excess with a baby wipe and then do the whole shoe with clear polish. I wont lie and say they look like new, but they pass muster from a couple of feet away........

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 12/07/2009 01:35

Nicolamumof3, did you use wwashing powder?
