gosh what a lot of help. My next question was what style/size to buy. Debenhams are having a fab sale and Im going tomorrow to shop shop shop. Need a new kettle too and toater, yipee for legitimate spending.

twiglett my essential pans are similar to your list:
medium pan for veg/rice (with lid)
bigger one for pasta/potatoes (with lid)
wok
frying pan
cassrole

Is teflon coating bad - dh thinks it is the work of the devil - I like it cos it's easy to clean my burnt offerings from.

Must check out all your suggestions now
thansk again

I feel useless to really make recommdations for you as I am here in the US, but I love my Le Creuset (even though it is very heavy). I have about 12 pieces, dutch oven type, Bouillabaisse Pot (7.5 quarts) and the smaller ones are great for rice and veg 2.5 quart and 3.5 quart. My favorite fry-type pan is called a chef's pan here, there you might call it a saucier or evase it is between the shape of a wok and a frying panI use if for everything and it is my only non-stick pan. It is made by a french company also, Bourgeat. For baking I love the Emile Henry pottery also. Good luck whatever you decide!!

bunny, I wouldn't say they were inferior, but you know that old saying "a pot to piss in..."

Best bring your new 'uns, we can roadtest them! (kidding!)

Stainless steel, including the handles, are my preferred choice because they can go in the dishwasher. Frying pan, I have a heavy bottomed one with glass lid (a German make). I think 5 saucepans from v. large to milk pan (which I use to make scrambled eggs, gravy, sauces)is a good number. Plus frypan, casserole (I have Le Creuset type but cheaper) for hob to oven use. Woks I don't like.
