Travel cots standard or bubble type ?

DD2 will be 7mths on our 2 week hol we are taking the car and are undecided on which type to get. If we get a bubble or little life travel arc ( any feedback ) they are compact / light etc but we are thinking that the more robust ones will be a good
' playpen' if needed plus she is a real mover in her cot so these probably offer more space - it is heavier and the mattresses look mega thin and very plasticy which put me off a bit ..Help me decide . I am in Italy so I have to buy on line - and I don't have that much choice !

It depends on how much you will use it after that. At 7 months a bubble one would be fine. We have one but had to start using our old proper one once DS2 was a year old.

We use our travel cot a lot though.

I think it will be used again in Autumn and then again next year ( hopefully) ....As to hire one where we are going is the same price as to buy one !!!

  • The proper one what is the mattress like ?

i think a proper one

the bubble ones look ok for small babies but once they're a bit bigger surely they just get out of it? or don't fit in?

littone · 28/05/2009 21:33

A proper one - they will grow out of a bubble one sooner and can easily get out. If you don't mind a heavy one you can get a hauck that is the same size as a normal cot!

We have a little life one. I was a bit dubious about it at first (DH bought it and I was expecting a 'normal' one) but it is great. It's very light. DD absolutely loves it and gets really excited when we put it up. She's nearly 2 and has never tried to get out, I don't think she could. Seems big enough for her and she sleeps well in it. The one thing we do is to put a blanket over the mattress and then the sheet over that to give a bit more comfort. Am hoping it will last till she can just go in a bed which won't be all that long.

If you're travelling by car I'd get a normal one. Someone gave me the samsonite bubble one and I never did manage to get in back in the bag after I tried it out once, patience is not a virtue of mine . I honestly don't see how it would be practical with a mobile baby though. I never used it. Aside from the fact that I couldn't pack it away again I wouldn't have wanted to put him in it much past the moses basket stage. I'd have thought at 7 months you wouldn't get long out of it.

I would go for a proper one tbh

Re the mattress - I put a folded up fleece blanket on ours and then covered that with a fitted sheet - was fine (if blanket moves about you could clip it and tie it somehow underneath the mattress)

We used a Samsonite bubble for holiday abroad with 8 month DS. It was fantastic in that it was incredibly lightweight and was mozzy proof (and £15 second hand). However as soon as he started crawling he could lean against the sides and tip it over
When space and weight isn't an issue we take our Red Kite travel cot with deluxe mattress. The mattress is very padded and soft (bought by grandparents for PFB and his PFB cousin!) but doesn't pack away with cot and only folds in half so takes up quite a bit of space in the car. The folded fleece blanket tip sounds like a good space saving alternative. HTH

I think the little life ones are a bit more robust than the Samsonite bubble ones - they are supposed to last to 3 and I don't think Samsonite are. We have the arc 2 and that is great, I think there are reviews on Mumsnet for them.

susiey · 28/05/2009 22:25

we have both types and both are brill my ds is 17 months

the normal type is big but is comfy for my son and he can't turn it over

the samsonite bubble is so small and although my son can roll it we only need to put pillows around it and he can't. we always put it on the floor.we will be styaing in a caravan and there is no way a real travel cot will fit in a caravn so we're taking this one with us,

PortAndLemon · 28/05/2009 22:56

DD could roll the bubble one well before she was a year old even if I blocked it in with pillows etc. (she may be unusual though as DS was a serious escapologist and has probably been giving her lessons...). I'd get a proper one.

MrsBonJovi · 28/05/2009 23:05

I would get a normal one...does your local asda have any left over from their baby event..mine has ones for £15

Rosa · 29/05/2009 10:32

Thank you all very much .....I am going for a normal one and am ebaying right now!!!
