are buggy boards totally shit if you are over 5'5"?

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah - am so frustrated! Spent an hour trying to get out of the house this morning but have 3 flat tires on P&T. Had buggy board attached to Loola frame but got to the end of the road and had to come back as I either need to walk bent double or I kick the board constantly.

Tried to put it on the Maclaren but can't find the right connectors and can't unscrew one of the bits and basically I can't do it and we are now stuck in the house. Feel like a caged tiger.

Have I wasted £40 on a useless piece of crap? (am 5'9")

I am 5 foot 6 and it took some getting used to but it was good to have it.

Can you improvise just to get out today?

GooseyLoosey · 26/05/2009 11:39

Had one on the cheapest buggy that mothercare sold. I am just under 6ft and ds was on 99th centile for height and weight. We managed with a buggy board for about a year. It was great - really useful (can't say though that I haven't suffered from back pain).

bohemianbint · 26/05/2009 11:40

I tried - but I've got it stuck in such a way now that it isn't straight and on the maclaren it tips backwards dangerously and goes round in circles. DS1 will only walk so far and it's hard to take him in shops on reins as he runs riot and it's a bit of a mare.

Goosey - did you have to walk in a comedy arse-stuck-out-way-too-far fashion all the time, or do you think it will work better when I fasten it on the Maclaren properly? It wouldn't be so bad if my arms were a foot longer.

I HATE the buggyboard. Am 5'2 and constantly kick it or have to stick my bum out ridiculously. But, also can't do without it as we decided not to buy a double buggy and my toddler is not a big walker. (wish I'd known then what I know now!)

If the board's not on, I sometimes make do with him standing on the back of the pram. It's probably against all health and safety principles, and he can't do it for long, but it gets us around a bit.

I totally know what you mean about feeling like a caged tiger; it's crap being stuck in the house.

leothelioness · 26/05/2009 11:45

I am short 5"2' and I bought a buggy board and hated it is was constantly in my way and I was never able to push the buggy proberly with it attached so I just gave up because it was givng me a bad back.

bohemianbint · 26/05/2009 11:47

Thing is, I need to give the P&T back to the fab friend who lent it to me soon, so am a bit worried what will happen then. Can you just make a 3 year old walk everywhere? Oh my god, but it will take sooooooooo long to get anywhere.

lol,it depends VERY much on the buggy its fixed to,i had mine on a nurse hello and it was great, however on my graco/bruin stroller it was impossible,

stubbyfingers · 27/05/2009 09:21

Seriously, I really wish I'd bought the cheapest double buggy. I thought we could make our toddler walk but it just becomes a whine fest and unpleasant for everyone. He is now 3.7 and STILL not much of a walker. I know loads of toddlers that will walk miles, just not this one

bohemianbint · 27/05/2009 10:04

I might look into some kind of cheapo cheapo double buggy. Just tried again with the board , DS1 refuses to stand on it because it tips the whole buggy backwards - it seems very unstable.

We've got a buggy board on a Loola and it works fine - have you locked the board so it doesn't tip downwards when it's stood on?

I'm 5'7" and I do have to bend over a bit, but that's because DS1 won't let me have the Loola handle all the way up as it bangs his head. (We have a Loola Up)

you lock the board with the red twisty thing in the middle.

juuule · 27/05/2009 10:09

Nothing to do with height imo. They are just rubbish and cause havoc with your back.

Meglet · 27/05/2009 10:15

I borrowed a buggy board and hated it. I was walking bent over and kicking the damn thing. Using my P+T is just as bad as I have to take little dolly steps. (I'm 5' 6"). The single urban detour is lovely to walk with as I can stand up straight and take big strides, the handle is quite long.

Why can't manufacturers make longer / higher handles on buggys . Don't they test these things first?

bohemianbint · 27/05/2009 10:23

Day 2 of incarceration. We're all going mental.

FreshHell - ah, you got me thinking, but I have a Lascal basic board and there is no red thingy. I wonder if there's something else on it that will lock it...

Anyway, meantime have been looking at very cheap double buggies on Ebay and have seen a side by side Maclaren which look good. Can't be worse...

I've got a buggy board on a maclaren techno and it's fine (I'm 5'6). I do have to walk with my arms straight which I'm hoping is a good toning exercise! I did have it on a macalaren volo (v. lightweight) but it just tipped that. i don't think the locking bit would stop the tipping though. Even on the techno it can tip quite easily if ds1 pulls on the handles too much or if ds2 is lying down.

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 27/05/2009 15:19

Oh I see bohemian - ours is the big red version which has a locking thingy, and it definitely doesn't tip a Loola over.

Seems you either love 'em or hate 'em!
