Lego or lego duplo for 3yo?

DD has very good coordination, and at the weekend she spent hours playing with a friends lego set. Even though the bits were a bit fiddly for her it kept her entertained for hours, and she only wanted help on some of the smaller bits being fitted together,

However, I been looking at it to buy for her birthday in July, when she will be 3. and it looks good too, perhaps more 'appropriate for age' but worried she might grow out of it too soon/not stretch her enough within a couple of months (an its not cheap, even on ebay!).

So, lego or lego duplo?

That should read - 'been looking at duplo too', not 'it'

duplo. My nearly 5 year old still prefers it to real lego.

i would ge the basic boxes of lego, we got them for ds for his birthday this year, he was 4 but i think he was too young for the sets or themes and he had grown bored of duplo

ChasingSquirrels · 25/05/2009 16:19

I wouldn't get either for a 3yo tbh. I think lego is too difficult, and duplo will be grown out of too quickly.

ramonaquimby · 25/05/2009 16:38

I'd get playmobil for that age - I have a nearly 3 year old and she DOES play with lego - only because it's in the house because of older siblings. Or a starter box of lego, they are usually about £20.

oh what to do. she needs some more toys like this. She is great with her imagination and her concentration, does not get frustrated too easily, does not give up too easily. Loves and is great with for example puzzles..

I might get her the duplo, small amount, mainly as she can get bob the builder stuff!

Duplo. You need a lot though to make it worthwhile. We've got loads second hand. My five year old also prefers it to lego, although with my supervision she is getting into lego.

pavlovthesmugcat · 25/05/2009 16:41

ah yes, playmobil, i will take a look at that too!

However, you just reminded me, I have another on the way, and if DD has lego, it will be all over the shop with a newborn...hmm.

belgo - was going to buy it from ebay, a couple of bulk buy deals. Then we can sell it on again if she prefers lego!

yes I also have an eight month old who is starting to crawl, and I have to keep the lego well away from him.

You should scour ebay for keep boxes.

belgo · 25/05/2009 16:43

oh x-posts

ramonaquimby · 25/05/2009 16:43

if you have another on the way, def go for the duplo, you'll get your money's worth out of it!

pavlovthesmugcat · 25/05/2009 16:49

postage to high on this one?

car boots can be good for duplo, we got nearly all ours at them. no good for lego though.

ohdearwhatamess · 25/05/2009 17:05

Lego (and maybe wait a few months). We just have Duplo, and 3yo ds1 is getting bored and frustated with it because there's a limit to what he can do. He much prefers his older cousins' Lego. If you think you might have more dcs down the line then it might be worth getting Duplo though...

Agree Playmobil might be better for a 3 yo. Very, very popular here.

muffle · 25/05/2009 17:13

We started getting proper lego for DS from his 3rd birthday because he seemed keen, and we now have quite a bit as rellies etc have added to the pile. He adores it. At nearly 4 there are still some fiddly things he can't manage and he doesn't build whole big items from scratch, but he gets a lot more out of it than duplo. I often build him a basic house or car or rocket etc and he then adorns it with lots of lights, shooters, moving parts etc. I think the fact that your DD is very into her friend's lego shows she's ready for it. Also, at 3 I wouldn't want to start getting duplo because it will get boring and she will want real lego soon enough.

BonsoirAnna · 25/05/2009 17:14

Proper Lego, definitely, for a three year old. A big box of mixed pieces.

pavlovthesmugcat · 25/05/2009 18:48

Oh I can't decide! I found some lego to buy on ebay and also some duplo.

I like the duplo as it is still toddler orientated, with bob the builder, can buy a fairy garden (not that the fairies are swaying me ) but the lego is very masculine, pirates and fire engines etc. Not that I actually have a problem with that as DD gets plenty of 'pink and girly' but I wonder if I should not try to have her 'grow up' too much, push things on her that she might not be ready for. She is clever (course I think she is!) but that does not mean she does not enjoy playing with younger stuff too. She will get a lot of time to grow up soon...

Normal lego will give enjoyment for years. The development from three to four years is amazing, so it might be worth getting it. Even if she needs help with it now by six months she'll be a wizz at it.

I've seen a noticeable shift away from the duplo onto the smaller stuff at 3+. Keeps mine quiet and busy for hours. Although i have to endure a running commentary about what is currently under construction! Bless!
