I've had my engagement ring for a while now (2 years +) and shortly after getting it I noticed a tiny black speck on the diamond. It is tiny and you really have to look for it but it is visible to the naked eye. I will need to look for the certificate but I think it is SI2. Is this acceptable? I thought slightly included flaws were only seen through a loop? The only reason I am thinking about it now is that we are getting our wedding rings made by the same person and I don't know whether we should mention this? We did say to him shortly after it was made but he said he couldn't see it and at the time I think I thought it was maybe a bit of trapped dirt or something.........
What would you do?
I know some people will say just to leave it but it was quite expensive.

I would get it looked at by a professional and see what they say. You can also get it valued. Did you get an independent valuation for the insurance? This should tell you if its worth the money you paid for it. Go into a local jewellers and ask if they would look at it for you. I know our local Ernest Jones were doing valuations last week for £50 but I'm sure independent jewellers would do it for a lot less/for free. Definitely do it before you get your wedding rings made, you need to know that you can trust the guy not to rip you off.

i would get it independently appraised, and see if that matches to the certificate you got. and then take it to the maker and discuss further, but would not be ordering anything else unless i was entirely confident in what he was providing

found this info

"Note: Any diamond from the SI2 clarity grade and up is considered eye clean, meaning that you should not be able to see any inclusions without magnification. If you can see an inclusion without magnification, it is not in the above grades."

from this site www.diamonddoctor.com/cms/online_diamond_education__clarity_grading.asp

so if it is visible to the naked eye , it is not correctly graded .

I don't think he would rip us off as he is a friend's brother and does work for Asprey! Just wondered if anyone knew about the certification. Thanks for your advice - will talk over with dp.

I'd recommend going to a truly independent jeweller for an appraisal before commissioning your wedding rings. It may be that it just needs to be cleaned but if there is an inclusion that is easily visible to the naked eye it may not be an SI2 diamond. If you're in/around London pop down to Hatton Gardens where there are loads of diamond dealers and jewellers who would be able to do this for you.
