If you use a sling: how do you resolve the sling-diaper bag ishoo?

I have a wrap sling for my 4 week old DD and want to use it for the garden show in a couple weeks. but we'll be out all day and i'll need diapers etc. but I can't figure out how to do both the baby and the bag thing. (I have to carry everything myself)
what do you do?

If baby is on your front in a wrap you could probably wear a rucksack?

MrsTittleMouse · 19/05/2009 15:17

I'd echo the rucksack. I've used a rucksack and a Baby Bjorn knock-off before now and I felt like a bit of a pack horse, but strangely symmetrical.

GiraffeAHolic · 19/05/2009 15:20

Just don't forget which is which and start shoving things in the sling and zipping the baby into the rucksack

I haven't got one, nor have I got the hang of my wrap sling, but have a look at Onbag. If you are of a crafty bent, you can even make your own!

  • Sorry Purple, didn't notice it was you!
Juwesm · 19/05/2009 15:31

You will, of course, need something that goes with your Hooter Hider

I am strange in that i use a sling and a lightweight pushchair, dd goes between both on outings. All the baby stuff goes under the stroller.

Onbags are great, but any rucksack change bag will do. The Baby Bjorn rucksack is good and can be picked up quite cheaply.

It isn't Chelsea you're planning to go to, is it? Because they don't allow babies, not even tiny ones in slings. Well, they didn't last year, the miserable devils.

alternatives · 19/05/2009 20:34

I second the Onbag. They're fab.

Or a granny shopping trolley - I've just bought a really funky one and used it to go to the Baby Show at the NEC last week - it was brilliant!

CMOTdibbler · 19/05/2009 22:13

Oh, and if you are out with DP/DH, one of you wears the baby, the other wears a rucksac. Easy. We have a cheap day bag from Millets and kept a terry square in it when DS was little

I use a messenger bag when on my own with DS

daisy99divine · 20/05/2009 00:02

I never used a bag, had a sling with a little pocket in the front into which I put spare nappy and outfit and then wear trousers wtih pockets

but then I am allergic to bags

purplemonkeydishwasher · 20/05/2009 09:05

it's gardening scotland i'm going to. i'm that chelsea don't allow babies!!

i'll be with MIL. and she's already pretty about me bringing DD (but i'm not going to leave a nearly 6 week old at home all day and i'm NOT missing this - I look forward to it all year!...unles it's raining...)
i'll have a look for a nice light rucksack today (that's a backpack right? after 7 years i still have language problems!)

MoominMymbleandMy · 20/05/2009 12:44

Yes, a rucksack is a small backpack.

They don't allow children into Chelsea because it gets very crowded.

I can understand why they don't want buggies but a tiny baby sleeping in a sling would take up a lot less space than some of the huge backpacks I've seen.

So no Chelsea for me last year or this year. Drat!

Have fun, Purplemonkey.

thehairybabysmum · 20/05/2009 12:59

I used a rucksack or just a long strap bag that i put on first across body, then sling on top. Was a b bjorn though, not sure if across body would work with wrap sling??

Agree with Mrs Tittle Mouse that i felt symmetrical!!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 22/05/2009 10:56

had a dry run yesterday. took DD uptown in the sling. had a diaper bag with a long strap on over sling. worked well. (as long as i was careful that the strap wasn't over the baby!)
and it meant that i could take the bag off when i wanted. my only problem was that i took her out to feed her then couldn't get her back in quite as well. i think i'd have to take the whole thing off and re-tie. not ideal as it would have to drag on the ground. and feeding isn't exactly easy either without taking the whole thing off!

I'm not much of a wrapper so I can't advise there but you can put little babies in mei tais (you keep their legs in) and they are so quick and easy to use.

ImSallyIHaventAClue · 24/05/2009 01:05

I used a messenger bag too but it could get annoying flapping around while I was walking (and I walked a LOT). So then I used a canvas shoulder bag which was smaller and easier to carry.

To re-tie without dragging the ends on the ground, you can put the ends in your pockets (there's a video somewhere on youtube I think). But the ends won't go anywhere near your baby so don't worry too much about it.

re feeding - Don't worry, when she gets bigger with more head control you will be able to feed her in the sling, just adjusting it slightly for the purpose. Then when she is even bigger you'll be able to feed her while walking nonchalently down the road
