I probably sound really thick here but i'm thinking of buying a new one...cos i love this model.i don't however want to commit to another contract so -this is where i show how thick i am! - can i just get any SIM card and use it in this phone? (I tried an 02 in mine once and it didn't work which is why i'm wondering if some phones just don't let you use a sim?)I know i seem really stupid but ... well... i am LOL!

Normally a contract phone is SIM-locked for the duration of the contract. That means that after your contract is up, you should be able to put a different SIM card into your old phone and it will work.

If you are looking to buy a new K800i (are they still selling them, I bought mine years ago) then you need one that is not SIM-locked.

The mobile companies don't want to give you a cheap contract phone so that you can then put a different SIM card in and not earn them any money.

most (not all) phones are locked to the particular Service provider it is sold for/by.

So you could buy the model you want on a pay as you go on the same network you are already on and pop your own sim in it. You can get phones "unlocked" from the network they are on but sometimes that can be a pest as you then have to get all the service centre info etc for messaging and things and with some phones it's not always 100% succesful.

Erm did any of that make sense at all???

ALL phones need a sim card in to work.

When you buy a new phone you can either buy them "Sim free" which means they can have any sim card inserted. Or you buy them as part of a deal from a network such as vodaphone/o2 etc.

If you buy it from a network they are usually (but not always) locked to that network so if you buy a phone with a vodaphone sim in, it will only work with a vodaphone sim in. You can get them unlocked though, lots of places do it, costs about £10 but it will not always work properly.

well,i've actually just seen this model online...from a reputable company.it's just the handset on it's own.will it have a sim in it then?
Sorry....and thanks to all of you who've tried to simplify things for me too.

They tend to be more expensive when bought SIM free but it should work.
