Nursing Chair....

I am struggling to find a nursing chair which I like - they all seem so big and ugly. Could anyone recommend a good retailer which is reasonable in price, does not deliver flat pack (well actually I don't mind flat pack so long as it is not in 100 pieces) and is halfway attractive. I only have two weeks to go until my due date and am starting to panic. Would appreciate any advice.

I've never used a nursing chair with either of my ds's. Any comfortable and reasonbaly supportive chair or sofa has done me fine. I have fed for 19 months in total so far and we're still going strong. Do you really think you need one? They seem very expensive.

We have one of these from Ikea.

The expense vs length of time that used for was something I did consider. What do you do in the middle of the night though, if you just feel like dozing while baby feeds? Or do I actually have a really romantic vision of feeding? I know so little about such subjects.

Thank you Willmouse,

Just had a look and it definitely is more what I had in mind.

We have a sofa in the baby's room so I sat on that for middle of the night feeds. I did start dozing off mid feed though and decided that this was more risky than co-sleeping so did that instead!

The ikea chair looks good for the money - just make sure that the arms aren't too high. Ime, it's not a huge problem when lo is very small but does become more troublesome as they get older.

I found a really sweet chair in our local vintage shop. The thing to do is sit in it, see if it's comfy and easy to get out of holding a baby in your arms, so the more upright the better. It only cost 30 quid and as it's not actually a nursing chair it will be useful for years to come

I second the Poang from Ikea, a little trickier once DS got larger but it looks good, is quite cheap, and comfortable. However this looks v good value.

I had one of these gliding ones from Kiddicarehere

DD1 was a really bad sleeper so I was very grateful of somewhere comfy to sit in the night, the other two woke less in the night so I moved it in to our bedroom and eventuall sold it for good money on Ebay, so for me money well spent!

The Ikea chair is good. You may need a cushion under your arm (breastfeeding or v-pillow is fine) but the arms are not too high.

Depending on how much you are going to disturb your other half - I always took my Ds into bed with me to feed at night (but then it was winter so needed the warmth). I used the chair for the last feed of the night and now it is still in his room and we both sit on it for his bedtime story.

It is good as it is really light and we can bring it downstairs if we have extra guests. It cleans up well. I have always sponged any stains off and it looks perfect six years later.

It has a natural spring/rock action as well.

MarkStretch · 15/05/2009 12:12

Why don't you just feed in bed?

I've always thought not having to get up was one of the perks of bf.

theDreadPirateRoberts · 15/05/2009 12:13

If you have space, a small sofabed or chairbed is a better bet - then you've got somewhere to be comfy the first time they get a rocketing temperature and you know you won't sleep unless you're close enough to touch...

The Ikea chair is great, you can also get a footstool that goes with it for added comfort. I have one, and have used it for all 3 of my boys.

PeppermintPatty · 15/05/2009 13:07

I just fed DD in bed. It's a lot warmer and more comfy too. I also prefered feeding lying down as I had a bad back after she was born.

We have a Poang too - they're v comfortable, but I didn't use much for feeding DD.

Could you just wait and see what happens? You can always order one after your baby's born if you still feel you need one?

cthea · 15/05/2009 13:15

I'd second PeppermintPatty above: feed lying down, wait & see before buying.
