Dylon for in the washing machine. Is it really safe? Anyone ruined their machine?

Want to dye a faded bouncy chair cover back to it's original (ish) colour, I've got the dye but I'm scared

Will it really not bugger up my machine and dye everything I wash in it for years to come?

Course it won't, don't worry, it will be fine. Can't remember if the instructions say to run an empty cycle after doing it, but if not then if run one anyway (or a cycle with dark things that wouldn't matter).

I dye tons in the washing machine, and have never had a problem (apart from a shrunken, accidently tiedyed coat!). I think once you've done one thing, you will become addicted.

What Kathy said. I've dyed in the machine loads of times and never had a problem. Just don't do a white wash immediately after

Kathyis6incheshigh · 11/05/2009 15:40

the main thing to remember is not to dye more than the max recommended weight of material or it may come out blotchy.
I've always been v impressed with washing machine dyes when I follow the instructions properly

Thanks all, I'll be brave and follow the tips you've given me.

There are indeed quite a few things I'd like to dye if it goes well...

Hmmm, it says to dye on a 40 degree cycle but not what length. Does it matter? Is half a hour long enough?

One tip - check the door seal afterwards to make sure none of the dye has got in there - it did in mine & the empty wash I did afterwards didn't shift it.

If you are concerned, then use the stuff you just put into a bucket of water. So simple.

Not that the other stuff has ever had an effect on my machine, but its just easier to use the bucket stuff, IMO.

norktasticninja · 11/05/2009 18:57

Good point Rusty, I'll make sure I do. Any clues on cycle length?

x DSM, the bucket stuff is all I've ever used before but being PG I was looking to avoid it really...

I think you would want to use the longer length cycle, to get it properly slooshed about. It recommends to do an empty cycle (with detergent) after. i normally do 2 washes of dark stuff after, and it seems to clean it ut ok.

norktasticninja · 11/05/2009 19:33

Thanks! I'm going to be brave and put it on right now

That was a top tip Rusty, there was LOADS of dye left in the seal. Could have been a disaster...
