So after weeks of petulantly only working when it doesn't feel too hot the microwave has ground to a halt (well it's stopped heating things up which is more or less the same).

What microwave do all you wonderful mn's have then?

It needs to be silver and with a stainless steel interior I think but just tell me the best makes and I will take it from there.

I thank you!

Mine's just blown up and it sounds like I'm looking for the same thing.

procrastinatingparent · 07/05/2009 21:29

Polgara2 · 07/05/2009 23:15

I've just bought a new microwave based on the Which best buys (scored 81%). Its the Panasonic NN-ST477SBPQ. Its quite large, stainless steel and seems to be pretty good, although pretty noisey!

From the Which Guide "This Best Buy Panasonic microwave has lots to recommend it - not least a string of great results in our main reheating and defrosting tests.

In particular, this is one of the best microwaves for manual defrosting, and unlike many models, defrost settings recommended by the manufacturer work well.

There's a good range of functions, including a turbo reheat mode that zaps extra power for reheating liquidy foods, delayed-start programs and the 'multi stage' program that lets you vary the power settings over specified durations without interrupting the cooking.

On the down side, we weren't impressed with the quality of the jacket potato and were surprised to note below-par results for cooking several meals in succession.

When it comes to ease of use, this microwave has a mixture of good and bad points. Our experts felt the controls are cluttered and too close together - meaning you have to peer at several buttons to make sure you choose correctly, so it's an unwise choice if you have poor vision.

To compensate, it does have an electronic 'demo mode' to help you get to grips with programming, and the electronic panel helpfully displays 'open door' when the meal is ready.

There's a trim kit availalbe (NNTKV63MB) if you want to build this model into your kitchen.

Pros: Very good at reheating single items, both defrost options work well

Cons: Disappointing results for jacket potato, didnt cope well when reheating several meals consecutively"

Thanks very much, luv2shop - I was actually wondering about that Panasonic. Right, off to google.

Polgara2 · 08/05/2009 09:38

Ooh progress! Yes I was leaning towards Panasonic as well having had a good one in the past. I had read good and bad reviews about some though so will go and check against model numbers. Thanks and for the which list luv2shop.

Let me know what you decide on procrastinatingparent (gawd it took me forever to type that correctly )

I have that trouble myself sometimes, polgara.

I have priced that model at £145 at John Lewis - saw it for £115 somewhere else but out of stick, unfortunately. Will keep looking.

Polgara2 · 08/05/2009 10:19

Yes just seen that. The other Panasonic one is about 110 ish. Need to compare features as that is quite a price difference.

I got mine from Laskys for 115.99. When I was looking it was out of stock one day and and back in the next, so might be worth keeping an eye on their website.

Heres the review for the Panasonic NN-SD466M which scored 78%.

It?s a little pricey for a standalone solo microwave but you get what you pay for with this Panasonic. It?s our top scoring Best Buy and it reheats quickly and evenly without drying out food.

It?s also consistent even when reheating several meals in a row.

Unlike most other microwaves it has superb auto buttons which means you can cook great pasta, curry or jacket potatoes simply by entering the weight.

The controls are clearly marked and it?s easy to operate which makes it perfect for people with poor eyesight or difficulty with grip. You can buy a special trim-kit for this microwave so that you can fit it as a built-in unit rather than place it on your kitchen work surface.

Pros: Reheats quickly and evenly without drying out food, consistent even when reheating several meals in a row, good at defrosting, very easy to use, excellent auto buttons

Cons: No oven or grill features

Polgara2 · 08/05/2009 10:29

Thanks for that luv2shop. I did see that Laskys was out of stock but will keep checking now you've said that. Will show reviews to dh at lunchtime.

Are you pleased with it?

Thanks again

No problems.

I am pleased with it. I've only used a couple of functions though (defrosting & reheating frozen food)and haven't got round to reading the instructions yet, even though there are lots of buttons/options! DP noticed it was noisey although thats not something that bothers me! It does look nice (as far as microwaves go). Our last microwave rusted inside so I chose this because it is stainless steel inside and because of the Which report. It is quite big though so you would need the space for it.
