Nursing Chairs

I know this has been done before, but the advice seems to be that it's either one of those glider types from kiddicare or a poang from ikea.

now although i am willing to take advice from all of you who have been there and done that, my problem is that those glider types are so fugly and having tried out a poang i just don't think (and backed up by speaking to a couple of friends who have them) the angles are right.

is there an alternative other than the normal every days couch, i want something for in the baby's room.

what about an old fashioned nurshing chair, liek this although it has to be said i can't imagine myself blissfully dozing whilst my PFB harmoniously suckles in one of this

Thanks everyone

looks good to me - similar to the ugly (red vinyl, not saying your chair is ugly) but comfy hospital chair when i had dd. i have a poang but couldn't feed in it when dd was small as her legs were too long. something without sides would've been perfect for us.

i just sat on the sofa with lots of cushions.

thank you, i think i could repaint & recover it to make it a bit prettier. i just can't decide if a big, cushioned, reclining affair may be better for lounging type feeds (i don't even know if such a thing exisits actually!)despite offending my aesthetic sensibilities!

Thanks again

that is like my hospital one!

I know you say you've ruled out the glider chairs but after having tried one in the hospital with DC2 I went and bought one (secondhand Dutailier for £50) for DC3. It is my must-have baby purchase. Knowing how great it is, I would even spend the full amount on one.

Everyone loves it. The children, visitors, DH and me. The grandmothers (with their bad backs) always sit in it and get booted out by a crying baby! It doesn't look great but you will spend an enormous amount of time sitting feeding over the next few years (especially if you go on to have more children) and I'm all for comfort over beauty.

I have a Poang too in the children's bedroom and it's ok but not all that comfortable - the cushion seat rides up leaving the wood digging into the backs of your legs. Not great when you have at least one child on your lap.

I have the Poang and love it, I have the matching footstool and together they are great. I use it with a cushion to bf and I have even spent a few nights sleeping in it alongside the cot (on v bad nights...). I wouldn't be without it.

I so want that breastfeeding chair but can't justify that expense, esp without actually seeing it in person...think I'll get a poang though as they are always being praised

CherryChoc · 06/05/2009 01:19

You don't want to be dozing really while feeding sitting up - just in case you fall asleep and drop the baby. If you want to doze during night feeds, it's best to set up your bed for safe co-sleeping, bring him/her in and don't worry about whether you fall asleep (You can always move them back to the cot after the feed if you don't want to actually co-sleep full time)

how about a bogostandard recliner chair?
I had the glider ones and tbh they are not wide enough for skinny me and baby and the action is a bit of a finger trap for small ones.
We have invested in a secondhand La z boy which is perfect as it recline backwards and also supports your legs, it will also go almost flat so if you want to sleep in it its comfy but the best bit is that you can fold it all away and it looks like a normal chair with no foostool sticking out into the room.
Just a suggestion

I did have a poang but it wasnt the right angle for me

Thanks everyone, it's all very confusing but your advice is very useful. Proud Granny to be has asked if there is anything she can buy us for the baby so i might see if she'd like to contribute to a gliding monstosity as a few people have said they are a godsend

thanks again
