I've been going round in circles for ages.

I'm not a pro but do like taking pictures will probably use automatic mode for quite a while.

Just can't decide which to get, anybody handled both or have views over which is best?

Really need to make my mind up.

Thanks

I have the D40 and I love it! I'm not a pro either but have a keen interest in photography. It takes fabulous photos and we're getting on really well together!!! I think the others had a higher MP which wasn't really of any benefit to me because I can't see me needing to print anything larger than 5 x 7 anytime soon.

Thanks NFQ and Mogs.

Interesting NFQ I wouldn't really want the video thing on the 90 and am thinking the 60 would be easier to replace if anything happened to it(highly likely with my 3) but I originally wanted the D80 which seems to be phased out.

The D90 seems to have replaced the D80. The 90 does seem to be aimed at pros though. I read one review that said it would be a waste of money getting one and always using auto.

Not sure what you get other than video with the D90 that you don't get with the D60. Mogs my friend has the D40 and has taken some gorgeous pics of my dc very impressed.

Hmmmmmm here I go again.

DH bought a D80 a couple of years ago and it is fab. Even I can take great photos with it!

Not sure how it differs from the 60 or the 90 though, so don't suppose this helps much.

I just stick it on auto and snap away. About 1 in 50 pics I take is great!

DH has the D80 as well and it does take excellent photos, but you do have to play around with it to get the right settings. DS 13 has done really well in a couple of photo competitions with pictures taken on the D80. DH seems to think the main difference between D80 and D90 is the video capability.
One of the reasons he opted for the D80 was that it was compatable with the lenses he had for his old Nikon SLR which he thinks the D60 wasn't.

I have a D60 and it is great. I used to have a D40x which was stolen and this was the replacement I got. I am a big Nikon fan, but I would say that the D90 is more a Pro camera and the D60 will still give you plenty of scope for playing with settings when you want to get off the Auto mode. I'd buy the D60 and put the savings towards an extra lens or good flash gun.

Thanks I read a review on the D60,great review but it mentioned blooming-err what is that?

I'm wondering how much playing around I'd have to do with the D90,was planning on just using auto.

Thanks all

well what is it for? just a higher spec home camera? or are you planning on taking and selling photos?

jenkel · 07/05/2009 15:33

DH has the D90, think the only difference is the video capability, which I have to say we used at the weekend. It just saves us taking a seperate video camera out with us.

DH is not a pro and manages to take good photos on it quite simply. and obviously he can take more involved photos if necessary.

"Blooming" is a sort of colour haze - digital photos can get it when the pic distorts v slightly, usually in places where the photo is over-exposed. I have not had any obvious instances of it when using the D60, although I did have to go back to my manual to sort out over exposure when taking pictures while skiing on a sunny day. Once I had adjusted a couple of settings, it was fine though. Whatever you buy, I really recommend reading the whole manual and having a really good play with all the features, it makes a huge difference, even if you are mainly using the auto settings.

Dp has the D80 and its great. I use it all the time for photos of dd and he uses it for landscape etc (he is much better then me!)

Your best bet would be to go to a camera shop and talk to a geek about what you want it for and they can point in the best direction. There are so many functions that are totally useless!
