We bought a "Baa Baa Blind" for about £30 - designed for travel but we use at home too, has suckers to attach to window. (Which means we leave it on day and night, the only downside really). Did a brilliant job at blocking all day light and stopping those early morning wakings. Sorry can't do a link.

Ikea do cheap black out roller blinds. I find them fab & used curtains as well

feedthegoat · 03/05/2009 21:04

I had black out linings in our last house and have put a roller blind up this time. The blind definately cuts the light out better and ds wakes up about 1 to 1.5 hours earlier when staying at my mums as she hasn't got one. I think ours was about £25 from one of D.I.Y. shops.

Or buy very cheap blackout fabric from eg John Lewis and either velcro or staple it to your window. You can buy little velcro strips to roll it up into too.

Very temporary solution but fits well to window and you can take them down if/when you no longer need them. MUCH cheaper than blinds.

I used to buy blackout lining and put sticky velcro on window and lining and take it up and down each day. The closer it is to the window the better - sometimes curtains are too far away and therefore let in too much light

snickersnack · 03/05/2009 21:19

As for whether they work...I'm dubious. Never seems to make a blind (ha ha) bit of difference to the time they wake up, regardless of whether the room they're in has blackout blinds or not.

blithedance · 03/05/2009 21:21

Yes. Ikea.

We have thin but pretty curtains and the blinds are in the window recess (so doesn't matter they are boring navy blue, as never on show).

Although as both children now insist on sleeping with a nightlight I wonder why I bother!

oopsacoconut · 03/05/2009 21:22

We too havethe Baabaa blind. I just stick it up every evening just before bed. it is easy to do, we also take it with when we go away. It is so great that we have bought a second one for our room for when DD moves out into her room.

here

DS3 has west facing room which was far too bright even with black out blinds. We have recently added black out curtains - what a difference! There is still some light contamintation , but he does believe us when we say it is bedtime (he is 13 months BTW).
I found The Kid's Curtain Company and thought they were fab.
As to cheap, weeellll... probably not so much, but we were desperate (Scottish short summer nights, anyone?) and it worked.

Tortoise · 03/05/2009 21:32

I have black out blinds in both DD's room and DS1's room.
I don't find it great TBH. Lets in quite a lot of light. But it was a cheapy Argos one!

I think i may invest in the BaaBaa one for DD's.
DS1 age 12 prefers to sleep with the blind open !

nicolamumof3 · 03/05/2009 22:31

i have black out blinds from argos and then thick lined curtains. makes all the difference.

bjule · 04/05/2009 14:05

I have a Go Anywhere blackout blind from easyblinds - it works with suction cups and is FANTASTIC!! I cut it in half to cover two windows at home and when we go to stay at my parents, we can re-join the two blinds to make one big one to cover the children's window there. Cheapest and best solution I have found yet!!

gardeningmum05 · 04/05/2009 14:10

bjule, how much was it if you dont mind me asking
