Scooter envy

My 2.5 DS seems to be able to spot someone on a scooter a mile away. He keeps saying that he'd like to have one of those at our house. Bless him! He's been very good recently and has given up his dummy so we thought he deserved a treat.

We're looking for something pretty portable, something that'll last him for the next ten few years and value for money.

People on MN seem to rate the micro mini scooter. What do you DCs have and would you recommend it?

In order for my son to be able to learn to use one properly, firstly we got the £9.99 one from Argos. Its OK for a starter scooter but rusts quickly, its rickety and EVERYONE else has one at school!
For his 5th birthday i got him a JDBug off this Skates website, which is great (both the website and the scooter). They have a buying guide and next day delivery. It was pricey at £45, but its smooth and fast and he can do little tricks on it. Gets us to school quicker than him just walking! Very well built.

I'm sorry, just realised your son is a lot younger, so my advice is invalid.. still look at that website though as they have those 3 wheeler ones too. x

The micro mini definitely

DD2 is 2.8 and goes racing ahead on hers

We have the mini micro scooter - my DS has just turned 2 and it was his birthday present - he can already balance and steer and freewheel down hills coming to a stop on his own with me running behind anxiously inches behind him.

I think its really good for smaller kids. The mechanism for steering works by leaning so it is intuitive and builds confidence.

Thanks, BB (love the name!). Interesting suggestion about buying a cheaper one until he gets the hang of it.

I'm not sure about the 3 wheeler ones as I suspect it might be restrictive. Perhaps others have a different view they could share as I'm a complete novice regarding scooters.

Does anyone have the Micro Mini Light?

DD2 has the 3-wheel one

It's great for balance and the reasons Dilettante said

DD also has the JD bug (someone bought it for her). However, she was able to ride it from aged 3 (despite it only having 2 wheels)

Definitely worth looking into, if you want a scooter that will last a few years.

BigusBumus · 30/04/2009 14:42

One thing about the JD Bug is that its wheel are very small and therefore the kickplate is very close to the ground. I am sure thi makes it easier to steer and less height to fall from! I wouldn't recommend it for a 2 year old though as the kickplate is quite long. The Argos one is much much shorter, better for little feet.

When I was looking at scooters it was a toss up between the mini micro and mini micro light - I went for the three wheeler as DS is 24 months...but maybe had he been 2.6 I'd have gone for mini micro light. The place I was looking in say they no longer stock the 3 wheeler and their own kids went straight onto the mini micro light.

Ah...I see it's the same place you've linked to...

"The deck height of the Micro Mini Light has been lowered to help with gaining confidence for smaller children.

We think that all this adds up to a much better deal for both kids and parents - in fact we and our own kids were so disappointed with the Mini Micro that we've switched them to Mini Micro Lights and stopped selling the three wheeler altogether."

If it was me I'd be tempted to get that one, I would have, had DS been a little bit older...
