if i buy a didymos....

am i going to get really annoyed by lots of excess material?

the only other wrap i ever owned (a stretchy close) looked so messy and bulky i could never bring myself to use it.

i have fallen in love with a didymos design, and i think i really do want a wrap this time (dc due 4 weeks) but dont want to feel conned by promotional photography making it look neater than it is.

i am going to buy a size six cause want to use this from birth with wrap carries. i am 5' 7" and pre-preg size ten, would getting a size five def rule out the wrap carries? anyone out there with a size five and any thoughts?

tia

Such a nice wrap, I'm sure you'll love it.

I'd get a 5 if I was you. I'm about a 12 and I find my Didymos 5 to be plenty long enough for front-wrap-cross-carries and back-wrap-cross-carries (and any other back carries I've tried). My DS is 10 months old.
Don't worry if you get it from brand new and it seems like it might be a bit short, you might need to break it in a bit, just by knotting and twisting and generally getting the stiffness out.

Come and join us on the sling cupboard thread!

Size six is best to learn wrapping for all but the smallest mums. Which design do you like? Some are bulkier than others. Get over to NaturalMamas for some really geeky indepth advice .

swottybetty · 29/04/2009 13:52

ach - conflicting responses puddock that is reassuring re you using a five for the wrap-cross carries. i fear neatness may prevail over the sensible option of learning with a bit more material.

the design is a julian which is a jacquard i think, one of the buliker weaves maybe?

i am a bit scared of the sling cupboard tbh

Don't fear the sling cupboard. I have a Maclaren too
My Didymos is a stripe, which I think are towards the bulkier end of the spectrum. I was no wrapping expert, but I did use a Moby first (which is longer). I don't like a lot of spare fabric sticking out of a knot either!
If it's any use to you, there's a picture of me and my LO in the Didy here (not tied particularly tightly that day), you can just about see the knot and how little fabric is sticking out of it (and also judge how you and I compare size-wise).
Is there any way you can try some out - go to a sling meet, or even experiment with a length of old sheet or similar?
On the 'size 5' side of the argument, the slant-cut ends of a Didymos give you a bit of leeway. On the pro-size 6 side, if you get one that's too long I suppose you can always shorten and re-hem it. And use the spare fabric to fashion a bag to carry it in, or a teeny version for dollies.
Not helping much am I?

going by your height, get a sz6.

cough. here is my album of slings for sale. I also have a sz 6 didymos elise for sale as well but I don't have a photo of me using it.

Feel free to look at my other public albums. 2 of them are my pics with my dds in slings. I have a few pics with sz 6 which is too long for me but as you can see, it isn't messy even when you have a lot of extra material. One sling is effectively a sz7 but was sold to me as a 6 and it works fine.

foxytocin · 29/04/2009 19:05

ah, just read. you are after the Julian. It is the same weave as the Elise. It is thinner than the stripes but just as supportive.

My favourite is the Pink Millefiore I have. It is part silk and so thin yet so supportive. It is thinner than the pure cotton like the Julian. I really want another silk jacquard weave.

TaurielTest · 29/04/2009 19:08

Ah yes, foxytocin has reminded me about the height factor. Drawn up to my full majesty, I'm about 5'3"...

swottybetty · 30/04/2009 14:06

ah - it makes sense that height also matters. foxy, do you mind me asking how tall you are? when you say that a six is a bit too big for you, does that mean it's a bit toobig for you even in the wrap-cross-carry postions? i cant access your site unfortunatley. i use an old mac and it doesnt support the software.

i wish you hadnt mentioned the silk blend ones! the only fabrics on the german site at the mo are 100 percent cotton and a couple of wool or cashmere ones in their sale. i now want to track down a linen or silk one ... any ideas?

the julian is one of their 'fine jaquards' - which are described somewhat enigmatically as a "very complex and seldom weave'.

puddock - i think that pic of you may have finally sold me on getting sling. you look the very model of neatness - and your ds is gorgeous

oh holy moly! i have just found [http://www.mamanatura.co.uk/catalog.htm?item=265 this]. foxy i am blaming this all on you ...

I am 5ft 4" but really skinny small boned. Have a looky at my albums. Some size 8s are big on me.

I don't mind wearing a 4.6m wrap. I just have about 4 or 5 of them and don't need that many of that length.

A slightly longer wrap is good for a first time wrapper because it gives you a margin of error to play with. If you like it, it deffo helps if you start to do back wrapping and if you are wearing over a jumper and your toddler / baby is wearing winter clothes too. So there are lots of other reasons to go for a slightly longer wrap.

I don't think a 4.6 will have too long tails for you tbh.

If you like I can lend you a wrap I have which I bought as a 4.1m (sz5) but is actually 4.3m and this length of tail fits me well. You can use it as a way to decide if you want a sz5 or 6.

Will write more later as dd2 is crying.

foxytocin · 30/04/2009 15:23

Feel free to blame me. Anyone else wants to blame their sling transgressions on me?

you can join the Mamanatura forums and put an ISO (in search of) in the FSOT forum. You can also join UKbabywearingSWAP and put an ISO there too. UKBWswap is a yahoo group where a lot of slings get traded second hand.

Silk, wool and linen mix slings hold their value really well and because they are usually limited edition, actually go up in value sometimes.

Most of the online sling sellers can order you one from Didymos if you want to buy new. If you go to the Didy site, there is a Silk Mint Waves which is also a jacquard weave. It is pretty but I don't think it is me. There is also a Silk Lavendel Ellipsen which I am really keen on but need to justify it hence the current initiative to downsize.

BeehiveBaby · 30/04/2009 15:26

The Julian will get very thin and floppy. A lot of the linen ones are very thick, but some are very thin indeed

BeehiveBaby · 30/04/2009 15:27

Sorry, I should clarify, 'thin and floppy' is a good thing!

foxytocin · 30/04/2009 15:29

ah, just clicked on your link and saw taht you found the mint waves all on your own. it's tru what Beehivebaby said about Julian and linens. You don't want an Elise instead. She is v. pretty. I bet she doesn't like pink.

foxytocin · 30/04/2009 15:30

yes thin a floppy a v. good thing. I bought an Eva 2nd hand and is the thinnest floppiest and won't part with her (for a long time yet).

PinkyMinxy · 30/04/2009 15:38

I've got two Didymos- one is a sort of two tone red/dark brown weave which is lovely, quite a heavy cloth. My other one is the indio cotton/linen one and that is more 'floppy' they are both size 6 and I'm 5"6'. I love my Didymos. They are onto their third baby and still look as good as new!

I recently bought a cotton ring sling for around the house and whilst it has taken a bit of getting used to it is also veery useful. I have a mei Tai too, which is pretty good.

You can't beat a didymos, IMO, though. And the cloth is so lovely I quite like having some hanging down at the knot.
