Hama Beads - dd's set seems very difficult - are we missing something?

DD1 got this set of Hama Beads for her 6th birthday. It is marked suitable for age 5+. Dd1 hasn't used Hama beads before but has previously had similar bead kits (with bigger beads) which used a transparent board so you could place the pattern under the board and then easily see where to place the beads. I expected that Hama beads would be similar.

However, dd's new set of Hama beads comes with 3 square white opaque boards, and as far as I can see you are simply supposed to look at the pictures (which are pretty intricate) and then copy them. There are no guidelines or verbal instructions, other than "Place the beads on the board." I don't think there's much hope of my dd being able to reproduce these designs for a good few years yet. It would be so much easier with a transparent board, or at least some sort of markings or guidelines on the board.

So, am I missing something? Is there a special technique to doing these, or is it as fiddly as it looks? And are other 5 year olds & 6 year olds able to do this type of kit?

That's it I'm afraid! But I was really surprised how easy my dd found it - she got some for her 4th birthday, and found them quite simple - but didn't get them ABSOLUTELY correct - but that didn't seem to matter. She's 5 now, and gets them pretty accurate now.

The best way to do it is in 'rows' of beads - or you could do all round the outside. But doing rows is a bit more manageable - only 8-10 beads in a row.

Sounds normal for Hama beads. They are quite tricky.
My DS1 has been good at copying the designs since he was about 7.
DD1 age 5 just makes up her own colourful patterns on the star/heart shape boards we have.

It is fiddly but with concentration it can be done

If she cant be bothered with a picture right now she could just do a completely random mess work of art

You can either tip them off when she is done, or iron if you want to preserve it for ever.

Practice makes perfect - or leave for a year and try again

We have literally 1000s and love them

yup, practice and in lines - maybe with a ruler or similar on the picture. DS1 had a dinosaur one for his 4th and we did it together line by line. He wanted another set and did that with a bit of help - and after that was away, occasionally asking me for help if he went wrong.

My boys have done Hama since they were 4 - they've never had trouble copying the picutures. Maybe some people find it easier than others? I have had to fill in a few gap ocationally.

We have 1000s and Mr Dyson has had several thousand more.

DD is four - she does random creations which look fab!

do it as a grid type thing, row by row
