Can anyone recommend a 2nd backpack to use for a toddler on big hill walks?

We already have an old Macpac that was my SIL's and we are now using for our 3rd child (12mths).

However, we are hoping to start doing some longer hill walks over this summer and will definitely need another carrier for our almost 3yo dd, so that she can be carried when she is too tired to walk anymore. She is very light- approx 10.5kg.

Ideally I am looking for something small and lightweight but comfortable as I will be carrying her and dh will be carrying dd2.

DS (4) will probably determine how far we can go!

I'd recommend an ergo. I carried my 4 year old in it for a bit last week and it was still comfortable. I carry my 10 mo in it most days. The good thing about it rather than a big backpack is that it won't be bulky for you if she wants to walk. They are expensive but worth every penny imo.

ah yes that looks like the kind of thing...it looks quite like another one I have seen hang on...

A few friends have the Patapum which is pretty much the same thing but miles cheaper

We tried an Ergo but didn't get on so well with it (possibly because DP is enormous across the chest and found that as a result the buckles dug into his armpits). We got one of these for a fiver at a jumble sale and we use it most days - DP can carry DS for a good while in it, I can manage about an hour. And DS is around 26lb I think.

yup that's the one. It doesn't get great reviews on here- difficult to get on or something like that?

I might look for a 2nd hand ergo carrier.

Would quite like to try one out.

Also very light to wear without a child in it, and provides an excellent refuge from ants when picnicking, as DS discovered yesterday!

Fairmidden- what I'm trying to work out is would I be better with a lightweight basic framed pack or a SSC sling type one.

I don't get on very well with carriers in general and tend to find them all very uncomfortable.

I see littlelife have some new ones out like this

thatsnotmymonster - please don't take this the wrong way.

When I read the title of this post I honestly thought that you meant that your toddler would be the one carrying two back packs while hill walking.

I thought, "one backpack may be OK for a toddler on a flat pavement but making them carry two back packs up a fell or a hill seems a bit harsh."

Sorry. .

TNMM - some of the online sling shops will send you one to try before you buy. Or try www.slingmeet.co.uk to meet other users and swap slings.

I managed the Ergo OK, but I can see why DP finds the framed one easier. It depends on shape and preference so we found, and it was just a case of trying things out. Slings sell on well anyway. On the plus side, I got more for the Ergo when I sold it than I paid for it originally (second hand)!

And at BetaDad!

Toddler Patapum is good. But a tiny amount of extra effort learning will open the world or Mei Tais and infinitely adjustable comfort

ROFL at Abetadad- that is very funny. I was actually thinking of making my toddler carry the baby up the hill

DH keen just to go for a more traditional backpack- may be handy for additional storage space- all those snacks for 3 children on the hills plus spare clothes etc.

Am still quite keen on the new convertible littlelife one tho.

Beehive- I just don't think I could get on with a Mei Tai sling. For some reason my norks always seem to get in the way- lol, I know that sounds ridiculous
