Retrofitting Isofix - anyone done it? Is it possible?

Thinking my other thread was too car specific and far too mundane to attract all your attention on a sunny sunday afternoon...

SO - please can anyone share what info they have about retrofitting isofix? We have a 10 year old Mazda 626 and I just can't seem to find any info online

I'm impatient as I know I know, I can call the service people on Monday.

TIA

you can have isofix points fitted into any car

is that what you mean by retro fitting?

Sycamoretree · 26/04/2009 14:14

I mean retrospectively fitted - as in, the points weren't put in at the time of manufacture. A lot of what I have read online would suggest some makes and models can be retrofitted with Isofix points, but others can't. Have you had yours fitted after point of sale?

Yes you can, provided Mazda sell the Isofix anchorage points as a spare part.

We retro-fitted Isofix to our S reg Volvo V40 just before DS was born and it had been brilliant. It just happens that Volvo do sell them on their own.

ahh we were thinking of getting it retro-fitted into our volvo.

i would be worried that it isn't as strong as if it was built in properly though iyswim?

Sycamoretree · 26/04/2009 21:43

Thanks ladies - I'll pop back on the thread once I've spoken to someone in service in case it's of interest to anyone else...now, or...ahem, retrospectively!

I'm not too worried about it not being as safe as if originally built in just because I'm thinking at least it's safer than no isofix at all - and most booster seats don't seem to clip in, in any way at all - which is quite .

Can't afford a new car so....fingers crossed that Mazda come up with the goods.

ahh yes, we were thinking of doing it for a highback booster as that, plus the seatbelt round ds1 would be better than just the seatbelt.

not sure i'd want ds2's stage 1 seat fitted JUST with retro-fitted isofix though, iyswim?

Teaandcake · 26/04/2009 21:59

Thisisyesterday - yes it is def as strong as factory fitted, it is bolted to the seatbelt mountings which are the strengthened parts of the bulkhead.

My DH is a mechanic and a bit obsessed with things being made of made the strongest possible metal and also being completely over-engineered for the purpose. He found these Isofix anchorage points and their fittings made to a very high safety standard so they must be OK!

cool, i might lkook into that teaandcake! we have a volvo too, so it's nice to know it's possible, had read conflicting stories online

Sycamoretree · 27/04/2009 14:13

Well ladies, the answer is NO. Our mazda 626 was not designed to have isofix fitted, and thus, cannot be retrofitted.

Grrrr.
