digital camera......any suggestions

with my belly growing dp wants to buy a new digital camera so we have a record of my increasing girth and of course lots of photos of the new arrival when it makes an appearance.........

all i can find out (because i'm not technically minded!) is that it needs to be 3.1 res or better for good quality printed photos.

have seen the cameras that have those printer things and am wondering if they are a good buy or not.

anyone got any advice/suggestions for my new purchase?

I have an IXUS 500 and it's great. Not the cheapest model but really good quality and great photos (easy to use). It's 5 mega pixels I think.

Have also got a photo printer that was a great buy at £80 - amazingly good photo quality.

Hi Moschops, I've got a canon powershot A70 - had it for about a year and it's fab. Very user friendly and it's nice to handle. Also what made me choose this one over others is the fact that it has sound on the video function which we use a lot - bath times/nativity/funny moments...
It takes 4 aa batteries - we use rechargeable and we bought a 256 memory from mymemory.co.uk for around £20
Good luck with choosing one!

Agree that Canon is great brand and that getting an IXUS will mean you can carry it in a top pocket and use it all the time.

We've got a Fujifilm its brilliant. v. easy to use. never even looked at the instructions

Yes, i have a suggestion. Praktica 4.2. You can get them on EBAY for about £40.00 or even less if you are lucky. I have two and they are fantastic. 5 million pixels, audio and video record, time delay and with a 256mb memory card you can record a video for up to half an hour. Easy to use and easy to put software on the computer. Excellent.

4 MP Canon Ixus here. Fantastic optics and low noise images. Excellent 'program mode' (ie automatic point and click results great without having to resort to manual control). Shutter lag could be improved.

After much research we recently bought a Fuji Finepix E550. We shopped around online and got it for £209. My dh is a bit of a wannabe David Bailey and really fussy about cameras/image quality etc and he cannot praise this camera highly enough - it is better than our £1,500 Olympus digital SLR in fact.

mamadadawahwah · 27/04/2005 16:59

wow, roobie that is a good deal. Been looking for one myself!

I was given a canon ixusi5, its a 5mega pixel camera as the name suggests I guess and I love it to bits.

Its tiny:-) so I take it everywhere with me and just snap away. It also has a small movie thing you can do which I have used a few times when my dd has done something to make me smile and I haven't had my camcorder with me.

When I was buying a camcorder when dd was born(now 19mnths) a guy in specialist camera shop said he had been in the business for over 20yrs and still thinks Canon are the best.

Having a tiny camera is great, I had never thought much about size before but it does mean I just slip it in my coat or pocket whenever I am out.

Canon Ixus is a really fantastic buy - can't recommend it enough. The point and shoot features are very intuitive and easy to use, excellent quality, but also you can tweak settings nicely if you do find yourself getting more confident and wanting to experiment.

Also, if you ever want to upgrade to a higher Canon model with more manual modes/better lenses etc, the menus are all the same so it's not a huge learning process to adjust.

Canon Ixus is also rated the highest in its class in Practical Photography magazine, too.

thankyou everyone.........we nipped into our local Currys on the way home from work and one of dp's old schoolfriends works there.....he whispered to us to go back on Thurs as they have a 6 day deal on certain camera packages starting then..........so will keep researching so we get the best camera for our money.
