...after a while my lower back really hurts!

dd's 20lb, and i'm not confident enough to put her on my back yet so she's on the front.

sometimes i seem to get it spot on and i can hardly feel she's there, but i can't work out how i'm wearing it differently those times. gah.

also, i always seem to have it so she can't get her arms out of the top. have watched the youtube videos but feel like i'm missing something obvious.

any tips gratefully received

I only wore my babyhawk once before I sent it back. I didn't get on with it at all, and have fared much better with an Ergo. Having said that, at 20lbs you will be much more comfortable with dd on your back. I can carry ds on my front, which is especially helpful if I have to breastfeed on the move, but mostly we do back carries and I can barely feel him. My problem with the babyhawk was that the straps just got twisted too easily. My ds puts his arms out when i am putting him in now so he doesn't have to wrestle them out

i would love to try a BH.

could it be your not tying the wasit straps high enough? i make sure dd4 head is at a kissable height in MT, ifshe is too low then it can hurt a bit. but she is under 15lb i think.

CMOTdibbler · 22/04/2009 21:23

It's probably that when your back hurts, you don't have her pulled in tight enough. Do you lexi twist ? That really helps to keep them nice and tight to you.

The arms depend on how high they are in the sling, more than how you tie

misdee · 22/04/2009 21:26

i always have a little bounce and retye the straps as well.

mololoko · 22/04/2009 21:29

thanks folks.

cmot - interesting - "lexi twist" you say - um, don't know what that means

should the waist strap be round my nonexistent waist rather than lower towards the hips?

any advice on how to practice getting her onto my back without dropping her would be good too

i tie 'apron' like on my non exsistant waist, not on my hips.

2jamsandwiches · 22/04/2009 21:34

Back carry is the answer. I did it with DS from about 8 months, I think. It was unnerving to think about, but amazingly easy to do.
Tie sling to your back and let it dangle.
Pick up DC and balance on one hip, with one arm in front of them and one arm behind (how you'd normally hold them on a hip.
Lean forward, and then gently hitch them behind you (hardly involves any moving) and get both arms kind of underneath them, as if you were holding them for a piggy back.
Then pull the sling up over the top.
It's so hard to describe, and so extraordinarily easy to do... Give it a go!

mololoko · 22/04/2009 21:38

ok, next time dh is around to catch any falling babies, i'll try the back carry (he thinks i'm mad carrying her rather than using the pushchair )

i know DO know what a lexi twist is thanks to the marvels of google. sorry! i have tried that but not sure where to tie the long straps at the back...on top of the waist ones?

OP posts:
CMOTdibbler · 22/04/2009 21:42

Yes, I tie mine on top of the waist belt ones.

You can do a swivel of the MT to the back too, but I find the hip method that 2jam describes to be the easiest

There are great videos of lexi adn back carries on Youtube

mololoko · 22/04/2009 21:45

thanks cmot will have another look.

from another thread, i liked the idea of your sexy stockings on the bottom half and a sling on the top half. it tickled me.

Ah, just goes to show that you don't have to be a fully fledged hairy leg and birkie wearing lentil weaver to use a sling

mololoko · 22/04/2009 21:51

i am wearing lovely beige control top tights today. to cover up my hairy legs for a rare day at work.

note to self: must try harder. might even dig out my stockings. i'm sure there are some hidden in my knicker drawer under my massive knicker collection.

OP posts:
mololoko · 22/04/2009 21:52

NB that's a collection of massive knickers, not a massive collection of knickers

i think i freaked people out last time i went out wearing high heeled lace up boots, fishnets and a slinky skirt with ds2 in his sling.

people couldn't seem to see both halves of me at once, their eyes kept flashing down to legs... up to baby... down to legs... up to baby and they got all stuttery and flustered

kept me amused for the day

CMOTdibbler · 23/04/2009 09:42

I love the 'does not compute' look people get sometimes. Once, DS and I went to a london museum whilst DH was in a meeting. DH finished, met us, and decided to wear DS back to the train as he was tired. People were well confused by DH in his city suit with DS in his TH snoozing on his back
