Recommendations for good car seat needed.

DS is 9 months old and we need to change his car seat from the travel system one he is in now. Anybody recommend any good ones that are user friendly etc, preferably one that will last him until he's about 4. We need 2 seats, one for mine and one for DH's car so nothing horrendously expensive, my car is a 3 door too. Thanks.

what sort of weight is he. tbh, I wouldn't change him over until he has OUTGROWN his current seat. Generally that is when he weighs 29lb or he weighs more than 20lbs and his head is coming over the top of his seat.

Was going to suggest Kiddycomfort pro - will see him through til 11 (they do one for up to age 4 too but can't remember the name) but then saw the not too expensive bit. Although I think it's not a bad price if it lasts until they're 11.

I don't recommend the Maxi cosi tobi at all

Our type one is a maxi-cosi priori xp. I is not cheap, but there are often sales and promotions. It cost us £140. It fits fine in our 3 door Polo and I frequently use it in the ILs car and my friends' cars quite eaasily.
It is a good, solid seat and still accomodates my big toddler at nearly 3. I think we will get to 4 before he needs to move on.

we got Britax Evolva it can be used up till about 11 years old, it can be swapped really easily between cars as it uses the seatbelt and not an isofix, when dd was about 10 months old, although we used her travel system one in my parents car until she had completely outgrown it.

nickytwotimes · 14/04/2009 20:45

But, yes, absolutely agree about being guided by weight. Ds was too heavy for his group 0 at 9 mths but would have been fine in a 0 plus until about 14 mths tops.

We got Maxi Cosi Priorifix XP for DS1 when he was 10 months or so (is an Isofix one which we specifically wanted, but can fixed with seatbelt too). It is a great seat and we are happy with it but v heavy / hard to carry even short distance to car for lightweight like me.

Got a Britax Evolva 123 when DS2 outgrew his first car seat (it will be useable up to age 12 or something I think). Am not keen on it at all. The Maxi Cosi one reclines which really helps when your baby falls asleep as it stops their head from falling forward. Evolva does not and also we find it virtually impossible to adjust the straps (to make them longer when fitting DS2 into seat more easily). Maxi Cosi one is v easy.

DD still fits in her baby car seat at 15 months. Think we will prob get another Maxi Cosi one though when the time comes.

check he def is too heavy first,
and if he is,the best thing to do is check on the britax and maxi-cosi websites as they show you which seats fit your car best,no point spending a fortune to discover it doesnt fit safely,i had an evolva1-2-3 and it was a great seat however i wouldnt use it as a main seat for a 9m old, maybe as a second seat it would be good though as then you wouldnt need to change it again when lo is 4ish,

feedthegoat · 14/04/2009 21:44

We've got Maxi Cosi priori xp and I really like it. So much so that I want to stick with Maxi Cosi for the next stage too. They feel solid and robust.

We have a britax evolva 123 and it is fab. DS1 was 12 months when we put him in it. It lasts until the age of 11. There is an adjustable headrest and the seat has loads of room.

Hello to you ladies who have the Evolva 123. Am I missing a trick with how to loosen the harness straps? I find it almost impossible. Any tips ?

LIZS · 15/04/2009 16:26

There's a button on the seat base - under the middle slot in cover just in front of where the strap for the buckle is located - push the silver catch down to release and pull on shoulder straps at same time. If they don't slacken freely check that the straps aren't twisted at the back.

Egg · 15/04/2009 18:10

Thank you! That's what I have been trying but they don't budge (and this is trying to get 15 month old in not 3 year old so not like he is too big). Will go back and check for twisting. Gah...

mumlove · 15/04/2009 18:41

Egg - does your seat have the (safe seat) clip in it? Mine does and DH threaded it in wrong when we took the cover off to wash.

naomi83 · 15/04/2009 20:00

I think the consensus on forward facing car seats is if the baby is average sized and sleeps in the car then maxi cosi XP is excellent, if baby is very big/tall and doesn't sleep much in the car (like my DS) then evolva 123 is fabulous, and lasts for much longer

fairimum · 15/04/2009 20:38

We love our Maxicosi Tobi! DD sleeps much better in it than the XP!
