Pushchair and sling for newborn?

I'm expecting my first baby and we're trying to decide what pushchair to get. We live in a city centre, have a small car (5 door Peugeot 206), but mostly use public transport. Both DH and I like the idea of a sling, so thought about getting a sling and a lie-flat pushchair, such as the Maclaran XT.

Do you think we will manage with the sling and this, or are we best to get a travel system thingy with a carrycot? The thing is, we're in a 1st floor flat, so don't really have much storage space, and I'm unsure how long the carrycot would be usable for... We're basically looking for the most convenient, space-saving solution that will enable us to still use public transport easily.

Any advice would be very gratefully received.

Get a Moby sling and you'll be fine - they are much easier for using public transport than any buggy.

A Bugaboo Bee and a sling?
Slings are fab but plenty of times I couldn't manage it as was also carrying loads of groceries!

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess for shopping I'd use the car, so would use a car seat. Not too keen on the Bugaboo - I find the three-wheelers very bulky...

For the sling, is it best to wait till baby arrives to pick one, so you can try it with the baby, or is it best to just go with recommendations and trying them in the shop?

get a stretchy wrap sling now and have a go at tying it. not that it is hard. it is easier than it looks.

DD2 was in a sling at 6 hrs old.

I would go with a the mclaren as you say in your first post.

look at 'the sling cupboard' thread in 'Products' someone may have one to sell you second hand over there.

and give you more advice.

don't buy a sling like a babybjorn btw. waste of money.

mrsgboring · 14/04/2009 13:29

I would say perfectly fine to get a stretchy wrap type sling before the baby is born. But I would actually leave the pushchair purchase until later, because IME it's harder to find what you really want out of a pushchair than out of a sling.

We had a second hand travel system from my brother but tbh I wouldn't bother - we didn't use it for long as it was so big and heavy - if I was buying from scratch I would have just got a maclaren buggy. Even with two children I almost always just use the buggy/sling combination (and either can go in the buggy depending on whether the older one wants to walk or ride).

I second foxytocin's sling recommendation - a stretchy wrap is fantastic - once you have tied it on you just pop the baby in and out - I kept mine on most of the day.

I'd go for sling, maclaren xt and car seat which you can leave in car if you're short on space in your flat.

If you're slinging and find you have loads to carry, I would buy a shopping trolly for all your stuff/groceries which you can wheel along.

btw - although xt is meant to be from birth, I personally wouldn't use it for a newborn as it doesn't go properly flat and my DD was a v small newborn.

Wow - you're all so helpful! Can you give me some names of the stretchy wrap slings? I'm living in Belgium, so finding things like this can be a trawl....

you could go for the maclaren xlr - they now do a carrycot option for it

mrsgboring · 14/04/2009 14:14

Stretchy wraps are Moby and Kari-Me (there is another but there are two slings with similar names I mix up, it's either the HugaBub or the HugaBaby)

I had the Kari-Me - I own two (one for me one for DH) and one is currently packed in my labour bag ready to be used the second my new baby is born.

LisaJasper · 14/04/2009 14:26

i would definitely go for the Maclaren and sling option, almost all the mums I know have traded in their big prams for lightweight Maclarens and we all wish we'd have just bought one in the first place. I have to disagree with the post about the Baby Bjorn though, I love mine - it's an active with the extra support, I bought a Kari-Me as I love the idea of a wrap sling but I find it too much hassle and didn't feel my little one was very safe in it, especially running around after a little one - I have kept it though as I'm hoping once he is bigger and can face outwards it will be better. Loads of people recommend them though so I must be a bit odd!!!
I also agree with the post that said wait until the baby is here before you buy a buggy as you really don't know what you will need until then!
