Travel Cot/Bugaboo Carrycot

Not sure if this is the right place for this or not... Apologies if I am in the wrong place.

I am expecting my first baby in a few months and currently trying to get everything organised for their arrival. One thing is really causing confusion... where they will sleep for the first 6 months.

The official line is that the baby should be in your room for the first 6 months, and so that is what we are planning to do - but we don't want the cot in our room, so we need an alternative....

Would love to hear what others did and also if it sounds mental to use the bugaboo carrycot as an alternative to a moses basket?? Or how about a travel cot?

Am I making this harder than it needs to be?

Whats wrong with a moses basket? I wouldn't use the bugaboo cot every day for 6 months, no.

4andnotout · 13/04/2009 14:03

Personally i wouldn't leave a baby overnight in a pram carrycot i dont think the mattresses are up to much really, how about buying a basic moses basket or crib or buying a 2nd hand one and just buying a new mattress?

tinyhoneybee · 13/04/2009 14:07

I was told that (depending on size of baby) moses baskets last about 3 months - so it seems mad to buy something that will last such a short time. And then also what do we do once they grow out of that? We would need an alternative anyway before they go into their nursery?

I was sceptical about using the the bugaboo carrycot but someone suggested it as an alternative, so I wanted to see what other people thought.

I wouldn't use a travel cot, the mattress in the one i have is so hard.

If you dont want to buy a moses basket then use the bugaboo carrycot, get a different mattress if youre not sure about the one it comes with. I have a mattress in my frog, it is a little bit wider and longer than a standard moses basket mattress but i use it in the carrycot instead of the 2nd hand bugaboo mattress that came with my frog.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 13/04/2009 17:43

I used a carrycot (not a bugaboo) but I had to get a matress suitable for all night sleeping the one that came with my carrycot was only suitable for trips in the pram.
With DD (my first) I had a moses basket and wished I hadn't bothered to be honest.

littlelamb · 13/04/2009 17:45

Would you consider co sleeping? I wouldn't use the bugaboo carrycot as an actual bed either. Overnight at other peoples houses occasionally would be fine imo but not all the time. If not, my friend had hte Portland crib from Mothercare that lasted a lot longer than my moses basket and didn't seem to take up that much room either.

glitterstar88 · 13/04/2009 21:05

BTW, i have never used my bugaboo carrycot for ds to sleep in, i just wanted a more comfier ride for him. We co sleep.

carrielou2007 · 13/04/2009 21:19

I wouldn't use the bugaboo carrycot for overnight sleeping. If you don't want to use a moses basket or have baby sleeping with you just use the cot from day one.

My dd was a very big and very long baby and only just fitted in the moses basket. She hated it I think as she was too big for it and never slept in it. We co-slept, which I swore I would NEVER do but it was the only way she would sleep. From about 4 months (and just before I was due to go back to work) I became super strict with the cot. Then at about 9 months she went into her own room.

I borrowed my sisters mamas and papas ultima which had a lovely carrycot dd would sleep in in the day (though not at night) your baby may not sleep how you decide and may have their own ideas!!

horsemadgal · 14/04/2009 10:05

Maybe get a crib?
They'd be sure to grow out of moses basket or carrycot before 6 months, cribs last slightly longer.

norktasticninja · 14/04/2009 10:16

We used a crib in our room for the first six months. DD was an 'average' sized baby and there was still plenty of room (in the length) when we moved her to her cot. She'd been sleeping in her cot in the day since 3 or 4 months old so the transition was pretty smooth.

I did use the bugaboo carrycot for her to sleep in in the daytime (downstairs) for the first few weeks and for nights away in the first 5 months, but I wouldn't have been happy using it more.

I'm sure you could pick up a secondhand crib quite cheaply and new crib mattress really aren't that expensive.

norktasticninja · 14/04/2009 10:19

If you'd prefer new, Kiddicare are good for bargains. Crib and mattress.

norktasticninja · 14/04/2009 10:25

The crib we used was more like this, I didn't like the idea of her getting used to a rocking bed and then having to leave it.

FruitynNutty · 14/04/2009 10:33

I had a moses basket for ds1 but he was so big that he outgrew it in about a week!

He slept in a wooden crib.

For ds2 I expected another whopper of a baby so got the crib out ready for him but he was only 8lb5oz. He hates the crib so we put the Bugaboo carrycot in the crib so he feels more cosy and secure. That way, if he's sleeping and we want to go out I just lift the carrycot out and put it straight onto the chassis.
Why don't people like using it overnight? My Bugaboo mattress is fine, no thicker than the mattress which came with the crib

norktasticninja · 14/04/2009 10:38

For me the problem with any carrycot is the solid sides rather than the mattress (which is really pretty good in the bugaboo).

I'm in the Netherlands and here they strongly recommend using a bed with open sides. They believe it potentially reduces the risk of SIDS, not sure what the advice is in the UK though...

SweetApril · 14/04/2009 10:50

You may find that your baby dictates what s/he wants! We had a Stokke cot which starts out small and converts to a big cot. I thought the mini cot looked lovely and cosy but DD refused to sleep in it for at least the first 3 months so we ended up with a borrowed moses basket which she much preferred (and she was a pretty long and large baby too!) Eventually she grew to love the mini cot and now, aged 2, adores her big cot.

Similarly friends of ours had a rocking crib and their baby just hated it.

Any chance you could borrow a crib or moses basket and just buy a new mattress? I also wouldn't use a carrycot or a travel cot for a newborn as a 'permanent' sleeping arrangement.

And, no, you're not making things harder than they need to be! I puzzled over all sorts of things and I sometimes look back and laugh at myself but I don't regret any of it because I just think it's fun making preparations for your new baby

Thanks everyone so much for taking the time to respond. All the comments have been helpful, and dh and I have decided to get crib.

Thanks again

We should never suggest co-sleeping. Babies die from co-sleeping in the UK every week. It's insane!

That is nothing wrong with the bugaboo. Just make sure you use a ventilated mattress and don't put the cot on the top of soft surfaces.
