here ya go aloha you'll be grinning liuke a loon reading it

Ikea. They're also doing these really gorgeous 'star tunnels' which fit over the bed so if you're in the bed it looks as though you're sleeping under the stars.

WestCountryLass · 23/04/2005 12:07

My DSs bed was from John Lewis, its just a very plain metal bed base and it is low. They do lovely beds in John Lewis and if you choose the right one you won't have to change it in a few years (obviously new mattress after a while).

SoupDragon · 23/04/2005 12:11

Get a nice proper single bed but a cheapish mattress.

I'd probably go for JL or a similar shop - DSs beds came from debenhams.com

Gwenick. I disagree with your comparison beween Ikea and Argos - Ikea is quality tat. It may be cheap and MDF but much sturdier than Argos etc.

Grommit · 23/04/2005 12:12

John Lewis gets my vote - better quality and more standard mattress sizes

Gwenick · 23/04/2005 12:19

Ikea is quality tat.

LOL - love it

misdee · 23/04/2005 12:21

have to say the bed from argos has fallen apart, the one from ikea hasnt. both have been jumped on repeatidly by my dd's.

Lonelymum · 23/04/2005 12:21

John Lewis always. It is the best shop in the entire world and you will want the bed to pass on to your second child eventually. If you shop in Ikea, it will be broken long before your dd has finished with it.

SoupDragon · 23/04/2005 12:21

Hehehehe It is though. It may be cheap but it does actually seem to last. I buy stuff from there becaues it's solid enough but it doesn't really matter if my DSs trash it.

I dream of the day we can once again have proper quality furniture without fear of it being ruined in 10 minutes...

Hulababy · 23/04/2005 12:22

DD's bed is from Ikea. It is really sturdy, and very inexpensive. I worked ont he bassis that most little children end up jumpign about all over their beds, when friends come to play they all do - and children are not often the type to look after things entirely - so I didn't want soemthing that I would be devasted about if it did get marked, scuffed, drawn up, bounced on.

The IKEA bed stands up to all of this (not tried the drawing yet!

Oh, and it appears to take a standard mattress size. Wasn't sure to start with - but have since measured it. I did just get an Ikea mattress as well though., as I nknow I need to try night time training shortly - so if we get too many accidents, I won't be upset about binning it.

Clayhead · 23/04/2005 12:56

AFAIK Ikea sigle matresses are 90cm by 200cm whereas a standard British one would be 90cm by 190cm, so slightly different but not much in it.

dd's Ikea bed is fine, I use M&S sheets on it (and it's only the fitted sheets which would need to be the right size anyway) and there are loads of lovely bits and pieces there which you can use to brighten up the room. I went for one of their more expensive pocket sprung mattresses and it's been great; sometimes dh sleeps on it when he's on nights, we have also used it as a guest bed.

Probably would have gone to John Lewis if I could have afforded it though!

Thomcat · 24/04/2005 10:47

Went to John Lewis and then to Ikea. bed came from ikea in the end. Got a very nice single with a view to buying another, a small double, in a few years. Setting it up today so she should have her first night in it tonight, very excited.

Good lcuk for tonight Thomcat; sure she'll be fine!

jampots · 24/04/2005 12:00

Ds had an Ikea bed as his first and it was excellent - passed it onto a friend whose dd was about to go into one and as far as I know she has passed it onto someone else so pretty good really.

Good luck for tonight and CONGRATULATIONS I didnt realise you were expecting

dot1 · 24/04/2005 15:40

John Lewis if you've got the money We got an Ikea bed for ds1 and it's great and was cheap as chips - probably get another one the same for ds2 next year!!

expatinscotland · 24/04/2005 15:44

John Lewis. We're not doing the junior bed for DD, just going with a regular single bed so she'll get more use out of it. Can always tart it up w/divans, duvets, headboard, etc.

Sleep is a precious commodity in our home. We always get the finest beds, mattresses, etc. we can afford. Quality sleep is priceless!
