Anybody know where you can buy drink bottles that don't grow black mold inside the top bit?

Or do you know how to stop it happening?

They should not grow this if you dry them out, take the top off and leave it on the drainer. Some squashes do this because of the sugar. If it's just got water in then they generally don't have black gunk inside.

I leave mine to air dry on a bit of kitchen roll.

Lmccrean · 05/04/2009 12:57

What about steeping in milton and rinsing well?

PinkTulips · 05/04/2009 13:16

i think she means inside the straw thing at the top possibly, just noticed dd's dora cup for playschool had black grwoing in there and it's impossible to reach to dry.

we air dry, etc, etc and it still happens.

think you just have to accept you're going to go through too many of those damn cups

ramonaquimby · 05/04/2009 15:59

just buy a simple one without and fancy straws and bits. and only put water inside

PinkTulips · 05/04/2009 16:09

yes ma'am

stupid of me to buy dd a special treat of a dora cup when i had to stay in hospital with ds2 for a week... my mind should have been on ease of cleaning, not cheering up my upset little girl with a special present.

and of course if they'd rather dehydrate than drink water that's their problem right? because of course 100% pure fruit juice is right up there in MN circles with frootshoots and fags.......

supergluebum · 05/04/2009 16:20

Ok come down from the ceiling PinkTulips! I think that milton and air drying really help. We have the same problem with bottles that DH and I use for the gym and flasks. Making sure the bottles don't languish around in gym bags for weeks days on end helps too.

PinkTulips · 05/04/2009 16:31

sorry but the holier than thou attitude round here lately is getting a bit much

supergluebum · 05/04/2009 16:32

Fair enough, but rise above it some people just like to antagonise others. It's fine to limit your children of this that and the other, but the parents are probably 15 stone and smoking sneeky fags, that's what I think anyway.

supergluebum · 05/04/2009 16:35

Also FWIW I don't think she was having a go tbh...

It happens with water as well .... I only used water on dd1s and it was there I ended up taking it apart and shoving a cotton bud down it - it was the only way I found. I still have a couple as they are handy for travelling and hanging off the buggy and I wash air dry - throw in the Milton and cotton bud... Also dd1 loves her pretty cups as she calls them.

MilaMae · 05/04/2009 16:39

Only put water in mine, have tried every cup going.

Bought the Lakeland ones last year noticed black on the white seal. All our aluminium ones have it in the pull up spout bit.

They're not cheap so bit loath to replace regularly also wondering how long it's inside before I notice.

Strangely dp refills an old mineral water bottle for cycling, never gets it!!!!!!!!!

Will try Milton and will maybe have to do a yearly clearout, many thanks

do you have a dishwasher? Try sticking it in there and see if it clears the black bits

ramonaquimby · 05/04/2009 23:00

absolutely wasn't having a go, you seem quite sensitive

fwiw we have sigg bottles for our kids and the spouts have never had the black gunk. only put water inside and I wash regularly with hot soapy water
