I can't believe I'm starting a buggy thread, but...

...I'm interested in what the options would be in terms of a buggy for 1yo DD that would be (these three are more-or-less equally important)

a) cheap
b) compact
c) lightweight

This would be for VERY occasional use (hence not wanting to spend a lot as the cost-per-use would be ridiculous).

I am clueless in all matters buggy...

Know anyone giving one away? Sounds like the best bet. I'm not an expert on buggys either, I have a bulky bugaboo and a stupid annoying cheapo for the car. But mysil has what I thought was great, it was the lightest I've come across and can be managed one-handed. It was a peg perego (think that's the right name), and I think there's a "one hand" in the name. Dead easy to fold. Look it up on the web. Think it's about £100. My crappy one cost about that and what a waste of money. Tend to use a sling alot instead.
Hand me down is the best option IMO.

you want a maclaren. if your baby still sleeps in it you want a quest (140 pounds new), if not you want a volo (around 80 pounds)

PortAndLemon · 03/04/2009 07:53

Does the quest recline and the volo not, then? [clueless]

Silvercross Pop is about £100 and reclines.

It also has a cup-holder.

Sorrento · 03/04/2009 08:58

Stick with Maclarens everytime I've strayed from the brand i've regreted it.

carrielou2007 · 03/04/2009 12:58

Maclaren maclaren maclaren (though I'm also a silver cross fan)

The volo is super super light, tiny when folded and can be carried over your shoulder but no recline, mine lives in the car.

Maclaren quest (I'm selling my black one I would say ideal for a 1 year old or a triumph (also selling my bright pink one )

Come over to pushchair shed for more opinions!!!!

I know [buggy threads]...

But I have just bought a Maclaren quest (if you buy an unpopular colour from Mothercare you can get em for 120 quid)

I did lots of research for the most compact and lightweight buggy.

Quinny Zapp still wins on all counts but I didn't choose it because a. it tips over too easily even without anything on the handles and b. looked too small for my massive 18mo to last until 3.

So my choices were: the Mothercare Backspin or Maclaren Triumph or Quest. All recline a bit. All around the 5kg mark. All pretty slim folding.

In the end DH wanted the Maclaren as it was just better made, more robust, better raincover and would last longer we figured. Maclaren have slightly altered the AWFUL brakes which used to put me off their buggies, so you can now kick down on one side of a catch in the middle, rather than the stupid side-kick mechanism they used to have.

But the big advantage of the Backspin is it is nearly a third of the price of the Maclaren I think.

WilfSell · 03/04/2009 13:06

PS DH also fell in love with the locking mechanism when folded and the carry strap.

He doesn't get out much but these two things mean it will be great when we need to lug it around the place.

PortAndLemon · 03/04/2009 14:59

Hmm. This is going to be used maybe 3 or 4 times a year for a couple of years (am inveterate sling user), so £120 works out at about £20 a use... I may need to haunt eBay for a Quest. Or would a Volo do even though it doesn't recline... decisions, decisions...

Anyone have an opinion on the Chicco CT 0.6? That's another one around the same price as the Backspin.
