Ds games- anyone in the know?

I got a DS for Christmas and have got bored of it. I got Brain Training, Sonic, Touchmaster and a couple that I don't like. I'm not into arcade style games, more puzzley type things. I tried my sister's Word training and it was Ok but I think I would tire of it quite quickly.
While we're on thesubject, what are the best games for a 5 year old girl? All dd plays is Dorabut again she's getting bored!

My nearly 6 year old dd loves super mario bros.

scrooged · 30/03/2009 18:06

Have you tried Lego Star Wars? I ds has hours of fun playing this.

DSM · 30/03/2009 18:11

Professor Layton and the Curious village is a really good puzzle game, though more for adults than 5yo's.

Super Mario is good as well, brilliant, though I have completed it twice and DS (4) can play it, though dies a lot..

My DS also loves the cooking game (Imagine Happy Cooking) and can play it himself no problem.

scrooged · 30/03/2009 18:14

I can't manage the puzzle with the pegs on that, the one where you have to make 7 squares on the pegs, making sure you don't use the same peg twice. Please tell
ds likes worms open war fare.

DSM · 30/03/2009 18:32

Oh, yeah..

Make one big diamond shaped one and then.. something after that I can't remember I know that is how to start though!

scrooged · 30/03/2009 18:37

I tried to follow the hints, they didn't work. It's driving me nuts!

sazm · 30/03/2009 18:41

you would be better getting an R4 card. they are about £20-£30 but you download whichever games you want,so if you dont like one all you do is delete it and download another,

that way you can have games for you are your lo,

DSM · 30/03/2009 18:45

What is this R4 card you speak of?

Haylstones · 30/03/2009 18:48

I did think of getting an R4 card but am a bit of a technophobe so was somewhat put off! Thanks for tips.

its like a normal games cartridge you put a little memory card in and the games are saved on the memory card,
you get a lead/a usb card reader to plug into your computer and you use that to put the games from your computer onto the card for playing,

DSM · 30/03/2009 19:01

Where do you download the games from?

sazm · 30/03/2009 19:06

you get all the information and instructions with the cartridge,
if you google R4DS you should find one,

DSM · 30/03/2009 19:27

Thank you, googled it and had a look.

Still don't understand where you download the games from though?

Haylstones · 30/03/2009 19:29

Is this legal? There has to be a catch somewhere and I assumed it was because they were illegal downloads- I'm prepared to be corrected though!

Dd1(5) likes cooking mama, cooking mama 2, Zoo hospital, Peppa pig, Guiness book of records and super Mario.

sazm · 30/03/2009 19:33

there are illegal sites, but also some sites you can buy the games from for anything from 99p up,
you can buy the cartridges with games already downloaded if you dont fancy doing it yourself(theres a lady on the fpr sale boards doing it)

they give you the website address in the instructions im sure,

MerlinsBeard · 30/03/2009 19:46

you could try puzzle games like prof layton and millionheir

DSM · 30/03/2009 19:55

Hmm.. I am hugely against illegal downloading and file-sharing, so I won't be investing in this card.

Thank you for the suggestion though.

Hulababy · 30/03/2009 20:01

I like Professor Layton, Animal Crossing, Boggle, Scrabble, etc.

My 6y DD likes Animal crossing, Nintendogs, Junior Brain Training, Brain Academy, Tamogotchi Corner, Cooking Mama 2, Imagine Teacher, Disney Friends, and various animal looking after type ones.

sazm · 30/03/2009 20:03

there are other sites tho that you can download from which charge you for the downloads, they are still MUCH cheaper than buying games,
the other thing you could do is hire them?then just buy the ones you really like,or buy pre-owned ones from blockbuster/game??

Haylstones · 30/03/2009 20:05

I hadn't thought of renting them actually- great idea, thanks.
I saw an advert for Prof Layton so I might try that one...
I thought the Imagine games would be a bit too old for dd at 5 but I might try one.

ah, I need this thread - any games good for a 7 yr old (boy, but don't be constrained by that) that are a bit less mindless than sonic? What games have some problem solving in them?

DanJARMouse · 30/03/2009 20:13

Proffessor Layton is fab

Make 10 is good if you are maths minded

Mahjong and Jewel Quest are so addictive, but maybe not up your street.

DSM · 30/03/2009 20:21

Oh, yes I already rent games through lovefilm. Is good actually, as I have bought a good few that I never play, and rented a few that I didn't like and would otherwise probably have bought.

And, on lovefilm you can choose to buy the ones you like as well. Handy.
