Best rear facing (group 0/1) car seat

DD's Britax First Class Si is looking very beaten up and needs to be replaced before baby #2 arrives. Another First Class in an option but we are wondering if there is any safer or better than this seat. DD rear faced until she was 2 so we'd like to do the same with this baby.
Are there any Which? reports that show rear facing (0/1) car seats? There seem to be a lot more extended rear facing seats on the market now.
Many thanks.

did you mean just the combination type?

abermum · 28/03/2009 09:44

concord ultimax always gets rave reviews!

Yes, the combination seats...it has been a long time since I bought one for DD so all the new terminology is making me a little confuddled! lol

My understanding is that a dedicated RF seat will always be safer than one that turns around. Which don't seem to be keen on RF Grp 1 (or 0+1) seats as they tend to be harder to fit correctly and they can take up more room (and of course we're all incompetent mini-drivers ).

We had a Concorde Ultimax for DD as she outgrew her infant carrier at 7 months. We were very pleased with it at the time, but by 15 months she wasn't happy in it for long journeys (>4 hours) and at about 20 months we replaced it with a BeSafe IziKid - which she loves. Its higher and has more leg room than the Concorde, and she was happy in it for a trip from Gloucestershire to NE Scotland (>8 hours - and was then happy to get back in it the next day). The seatbelt routing is also completely different, so its a lot easier to get her in and out (the belt isn't in the way) and it feels a LOT more secure. I don't think Which have reviewed it, but it scored extremely well in tests in Scandinavia.

Have a look at this website for more info on dedicated RF car seats, including user reviews, and suggestions on where to buy them .

Where did you buy your Izikid from? They look great seats. Is your used with Isofix, does the seat belt need to be very long? Can it go from birth?
Many thanks

I bought mine from this place in Sweden. I did get the right seat in the end and they did sort out the problems, but I wasn't terribly impressed with the service. Since then they've launched this site, which handles overseas orders. I don't know whether this has improved things. There is a gentlement on the rearfacing forum called Adventuredad who has bought and posted seats on behalf of UK buyers, apparently with fewer problems although I've no personal experience (if you dig around on the rearfacing site you may find some reviews, and I think I saw he's just setting up his own shop). The only place I've found them in the UK is here, but the price is ridiculous!

Ours isn't Isofix, as the Isofix version wasn't available in November when we bought it. I don't think seatbelts would need to be hugely long as the belt doesn't go round the back of the seat - but I don't know that for sure, I just know it works in our Audi A3 without too much grief. The ladies at the Essex County Council In-Car Safety Officers (here) are extremely helpful and could probably tell you over the phone, or have one you can try if you can get to Raleigh in Essex (or if they're doing a car seat safety check near you soon and have space in the car - they brought 3 seats for us to try last autumn).

Yes, it can go from birth. Its licensed to 18kg in Europe, although its passed to 25kg in Sweden.

Hope that helps

Thanks Tangle!
I saw the £900 price and choked for a while! Shipping from Sweden I'm guessing works out much cheaper. We have a few more months to go so hopefully the exchange rate will work more in our favour!
I've posted on the rearfacing forum too now, thank you for the link.
Thanks again!
