One of this weeks specials at lidl is a waffle maker and on impulse i bought one yeasterday, cost £12ish. Have just made one as a test before kids come home and it was gorgeous! Recipe is for a sweet batter, but also includes recipe for ham and onion waffle where you mixed finely sliced ham and onion in with the batter and leave out the sugar. If i'm feeling adventurous (& bored!) I may even try bunging in some mashed potato for potato waffles! Great for the money (although I see argos has one for £28 which has removable plates so can have sarnies, waffles or doughnuts, but we have toasted sarnie maker already)

No no, I don't need another gadget even if I want one. I am waiting for their breadmaker to reappear. I missed that one.

Homemade waffles are gorgeous -especially with maple syrup on...or chocolate sauce/nutella....or ice-cream

lou222 · 25/03/2009 15:34

theresa why why why have you done this?
I don't need another gadget, I don't want another gadget, I haven't time to make waffles!
(am wondering whether to go to Lidl tomorrow or Friday)!!

It's national waffle day here in Sweden.

Interesting fact of the day

Theresa · 26/03/2009 10:15

After last nights tea (or more to the point pudding!) my kids have asked if we can have a waffle day at least once a month. We had them with fruit, cream and choc sauce and they were really nice. Just a little brush of oil before using and i made 8 without having to 're-grease' and despite plates not being removable or anything it was actually spotless and so only needs a wipe with a cloth, and its not that big so wont take up too much room in the cupboard! I have lots of potatoes and am considering experiment to make potato waffles today. Will let you know how i get on!

Can we have a fab waffle recipe then? I have a waffle maker I have never used as have no recipe.

Stayingsunnygirl · 26/03/2009 10:39

Please, please please can you post the waffle recipe? I have my mum's old waffle maker (a metal thing that you use on the stove) but don't have her waffle recipe. Ds3 tried to use it with pancake batter last weekend but it went horribly wrong - as the mess in my kitchen demonstrated!!

Theresa · 26/03/2009 12:46

I'm having a lie down before i head back to the kitchen to clean up the potato! Dont do it girls! I whizzed the potato with hand blender to make really smooth and added some milk to make it more 'spredable' put a dollop on each of the compartments, spread it around and shut the waffle maker. Then i watched the potato ooze out of the sides and i thought maybe i put too much in. When i opened it after a couple of minutes - oh lord - it hadnt 'stuck together at all' it was just smeared all over, in and out of every 'nobble'. I considered chucking it in the bin and buying another but the clean up is in hand, just having a spell before i go back! Yes i'll put recipe on later, cant be bothered to find it at moment!

It now looks remarkably clean again! Recipe in instruction book not very good, didnt say how many it made but was worried by the fact it said 5 eggs (!) but this is it:-
Melt 250g marg/butter and add to it 200g sugar and 5 eggs. Once all mixed gradually add 500g flour (didnt say what sort) & 2 tsp baking poweder, then 350-400ml milk.
I decided to roughly half it aND THIS IS WHAT I USED(oops):-
125 g butter, 100g sugar, 3 eggs, 200g flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 150ml milk. I'd decided to use plain flour, then discovered I had only a total of 200g of flour so it was half plain & half s.r.but it worked fine and made 8 waffles. Next time i'll try just 2 eggs. The other 2 recipes in book suggest adding cubed apples and less sugar to the mix or for a savoury one:-
250g flour, 1/2 tsp bking powder, 70g butter, 400ml milk or water, 1 cubed onion & 100g cubed ham. Quite like the idea of savoury one but not sure what you;d eat with it, maybe beans, or maybe a salad?

Many thanks, Theresa - ds3 will be having a go at that at the weekend, I have no doubt.

mogs0 · 26/03/2009 16:38

I bought a MIckey Mouse one in the Jan sales and it's fab!! The recipe that came with mine says it makes 16 waffles but it easily does double that so we have to invite everyone over for Sunday breakfast or half the ingredients.

Sorry to hear the potato waffles didn't work so well. I was thinking what a good idea and that I might try it myself but I'll wait until the recipe has been perfected!!

Stayingsunnygirl - do you know if it's still possible to get a stove-top waffle maker? I don't want an electric one as I have - ahem - an Aga, but would love a new time waster.

Stayingsunnygirl · 26/03/2009 18:42

I had a quick look on ebay and found this, this vintage one and another vintage one.

Nontoxic · 26/03/2009 20:53

Ah, it's a waffle iron! That's really kind, thanks so much.

Aefondkiss · 26/03/2009 23:50

ooh that would be a great recipe for people with hens ... in fact maybe you should get hens now too Theresa?

I did lol when I read about the potato sorry.
