Lunch Boxes

My children have those soft lunch boxes which I am finding a bind to clean. I want to get them something else so was thinking of a more traditional tin box (though wouls consider plastic). Are these any good? Does anyone use anything else? Also are there any online companies that have a range so I don't have to shop around too much to find one to suit each child.
Thanks in advance

no dd1 has a fabric one. I just wipe the inside everyday during the week and stick it in the wash at the weekend.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/03/2009 10:30

I have some of these

We also have some really cute bento lunchboxes from the japan centre.

Amazon has a huge range

stealthsquiggle · 25/03/2009 10:32

Very posh, TDWP

Do your fabric ones survive the wash? Some of ours have splits in the waterproof lining just from normal washing - is this just because they are really cheap ones?

Maiakins · 25/03/2009 10:32

We swapped a very smelly fabric lunch box (after 1 year of constant use) to a traditional tin box and haven't looked back. It is a bit more heavy (marginally) to carry, but well worth it and I'm sure more hygenic. We got our tin lunch box from Mothercare, but I've seen them in the local toy shop too.

Amazon also do a selection - Superman, Dinosaurs, Charlie and Lola, etc. about £7-8 on average. Just type in tin lunch box in the search feature.

stealth thats the problem we suffer from too and wiping just doesnt get into the seams well.
I'll have a look on amazon though that place annoys me now because I find the few things I want them discover theyre all actually sold by different people ahhh

Maiakins- good to know its worth changing

Stealthsquiggle mine survives but I wash it on a cold wash on no spin.

those are lovely, Bronze - I like the dragon, and the cockatoos, and - well - all of them, really!

I'm wondering if theyre big enough. I can't picture the size very easily.

How do those tin ones stand up to the general rough and tumble of school life? Having seen my 5 year old boys drop kick their bags as they come out of school I'm foreseeing a few major dents within a week of use.

At our school our dinner ladies have taken the bin away to stop food being uneaten. I'm now having to contend with half eaten yogs and the remains of juice cartons spread all over the insides of their lunchbags. I've got to find something rigid as the seams mean they're starting to smell.

Have been m/washing in desperation but the seams have come away so don't think they last as long.

When I was teaching they all had rigid plastic ones that seemed pretty sturdy, can't find any anywhere. If those tin ones are strong they could be the answer to my prayers

Maiakins · 25/03/2009 14:32

The tin ones seem to be quite sturdy - the catch continues to work well and no dents. But I don't have a 5 year old boy and I can well imagine it might be more rigorously tested. But it cleans really easily and is not smelly.

bronze · 25/03/2009 14:55

mila I was also tempted by these I don't know if they would be any more sturdy or whether they would just shatter. I too have small boys

Those look good bronze, might try both as the plastic ones are quite reasonable-thanks

I use a fabric lunch bag with a plastic tub inside for the sandwiches. Dd knows to put the half-eat yoghurt in the tub and not straight in the bag.

Wallace · 25/03/2009 16:13

I bought the lunch tins from Millets and they were so flimsy. One fell from about a metre high (before it was even used) and fell to pieces. They went straight back to the shop.

I wash lunch bags in the washing machine but they do split eventually - ds's still going strong, dd's has split - they were bought in August.

I love the look of those tins on mermaids and pirates.

Mercy · 25/03/2009 16:16

My dc have plastic ones by Sistema.

Dd's is nearly 4 years old and still going strong

WowOoo · 25/03/2009 16:17

I'm looking for decent lunchboxes.

Like the one you've linked DevilWears.

WowOoo · 25/03/2009 16:19

Are the stainless steel ones heavy?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 25/03/2009 16:31

Not at all, obviously heavier than plastic but not a great deal more.

WowOoo · 25/03/2009 17:54

Thanks!
Sorry Bronze! Hope you find that perfect lunchbox soon.
Will let MN know if I can find anything close to perfection....

frankie3 · 27/03/2009 12:22

A message to lunch box manufacturers. - There is definitely a gap in the market for insulated lunch boxes that are easy to clean and that can go in the dishwasher.

I have to throw out and replace my lunch boxes every year as they start to smell - so maybe that is why they are so badly designed!
