maclaren superdreamer - is it safe?

Hello, I'm really keen to have a rear-facing buggy for my toddler, and have spotted the happy memories some of you have of the maclaren superdreamer. I've bid for one on ebay, but am now worried that it doesn't comply with the current BS safety standards (current since 1997) - I'm wondering, is that why the old-style rear-facing buggies died out? was there something not-safe about them (e.g.: tipping, bad brakes, fingers could get caught?). Any info from those who've actually seen one of these would be much appreciated!

don't know. it sounds great tho.

if maclaren managed to put out a rear facing umbrella pushchair now, it would fly off the racks... they must know this, surely.

hope they wise up soon in time for dc2.

StercusAccidit · 24/03/2009 08:37

God they're old.. i had one for my DD

It was FAB

I don't remember if it was the same one .. oo no it wasn't.. i also had a britax one that was flip over reversible..backwards or forward facing..i loved that too.

Yes they would fly off the shelves as mary said .. i would have loved a rear facing PC

FigmentOfYourImagination · 24/03/2009 08:41

I've no idea, sorry. Although I remember everyone had them and I don't recall I know having an incident with theirs.

The old Silvercross ones were good too. They were very sturdy. Much sturdier than the maclaren, imo

FigmentOfYourImagination · 24/03/2009 08:44

Presumably this is the one you mean?

I had the dolls version !

FigmentOfYourImagination · 24/03/2009 08:45

It looks to be in v good nick though for 20 years old

FigmentOfYourImagination · 24/03/2009 08:49

The Wayfarer is the Silvercross I'm thinking of

Terrible pictures but this is it, you can get a carrycot for it too

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 24/03/2009 08:55

ahhh memories!

They were truly fab! I wouldn't pay that though

mumblemum · 24/03/2009 08:58

No, it's another one that closed last night (and much cheaper, but not new in box). I've won it but the woman hasn't contacted me yet to arrange to collect & I just worked out that it must be too old for the current safety standard. Just trying to figure out if it's worth taking the theoretical safety risk just to be able to talk to DD, when she has a perfectly safe but irritating buggy already...

hauck infinity is pretty much the same thing and easily gotten quite cheaply on Ebay?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/03/2009 09:00

Surely you have to buy it if you have won though?

mumblemum · 24/03/2009 09:01

I need something small and light though and not so wide - that's why I didn't just get a modern rear-facer from the start - not just a money issue, have way too many stairs to manage a big one, and I'd read on here before that the old maclarens are light and nippy.

I was the only bidder and as I say she hasn't yet told me how to pay & collect, so she's lost nothing really if I pull out. I'm an ebay newbie though! It's more that I've been dreaming of these for ages but am now having qualms that shouldn't risk DD's safety for my buggy geekiness!

I can't see there would be major issues with it. I used them when I was a nanny back in the day and they were great.

SoupDragon · 24/03/2009 09:06

You won it, you have to buy it.

misdee · 24/03/2009 09:07

you won it, its l;egally binding you have t pay for it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/03/2009 09:16

Sadly you have to pay for it, and it's not her problem if you change your mind, you still have to get it, maybe you can resell it?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/03/2009 09:19

Although I personally would happily use it!!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/03/2009 09:20

(I who was wheeled around without accident in a huge coach built pram that someone had thrown away, my mum was skint!)

mumblemum · 24/03/2009 09:52

I've really been wanting one for ages and happy to pay, just having a panic that might damage my DD by using funny old pram! Plus DP is sure to mock lots.

Phew, just found this article from 1991 that says Maclaren were already exceeding safety standards, and gives an idea of the tests they did - sounds the same as now, same weight requirements, etc. Now I just need the seller to contact me!
