Evolva 1-2-3 - would you buy this for a group 2-3 car seat?

I am looking for a group 2-3 carseat. One model of this is on offer at Argos. Britax were their normal unhelpful self when I called for advice. Would you buy this if you were just after a group 2-3 car seat? How would this compare with the group 2-3 seats it does? Thanks

how old is your lo?
what weight is he/she?
i had the 1-2-3 ultra for my 18m old and i though it was GREAT

CarGirl · 23/03/2009 14:27

Halfords have the Britax Hi-liner on offer which I prefer to the 123

sleepsforwimps · 23/03/2009 14:27

You can join Which? for £1 and read their independent reviews. Not sure this particular seat is in the reviews though.

PinkTulips · 23/03/2009 14:29

we have one.

we recently took the 5 point harness off for ds1 and it's a great seat with the car seat belt. we have a graco group 2-3 for dd and i prefer tha britax as it's sturdier and less fiddely to get the seat belt around

stressed2007 · 23/03/2009 14:29

I am a member of which - just LAZY!
Not sure Hi- liner is as sturdy

OP posts:
sazm · 23/03/2009 14:38

i have 2 hi-liners and i really like them,

the 1-2-3 was in the which reviews and it got the best review of that type of seat, but it said that the individual grouped seats are better because they are more suited to the childs size, rather than one seat doing a range of jobs,

it really depends what size/weight the child is though,as to which seat would be better,

Having tried seats that convert from 5 point harness ones to those using just the 3 point adult seatbelt, I am a firm believer in buying each stage seat seperately.

They just don't seem to fit the bill quite as well if they grow with the child - they all seem less supportive, less recline etc.

We've had a maxi cosi tobi and have just gone to a maxi cosi xr and both have been excellent

sazm · 23/03/2009 14:43

it does depend in the child though,
my dd was too tall for her stage 9m-4y seat at 18m!
but she was too light for a highbacked booster,
so the only seats that were any good were the evolva 1-2-3 or the recaro (which wasnt as good in the safety)

stressed2007 · 23/03/2009 16:23

pinktulips gow old is DS1? I am after seats for a 15 month old (very heavy)and a 3 year old who is uograding form a maxi cosi one.

I have a maxi cosi SPS (think that is right not the XR anyway) and I just can't see where the protection is in it if god forbid there was an accident.

PinkTulips · 23/03/2009 16:32

he's 2.5 but huge for his age, the same size as my 4 year old!

the 5 point harness was getting too awkward and had to be readjusted every time he got in the car depending on how many layers he was wearing and it was taking ages to get him in and out every time so i switched to the car seat belt... he's more than tall enough for it though, it doesn't catch him around the neck so i'm confidant it's safe.

stressed2007 · 23/03/2009 21:38

Am I going mad? I can't find ANY review of the evolva 1-2-3 on the Which report I am looking at on line - has the report all been upgraded?

OP posts:
sazm · 23/03/2009 22:46

it was about a yr ago that i bought mine,
if you wont be using the harness, i would go for a highback booster rather than a 1-2-3 model,
i would go for a highback booster for your oldest and move your lo into the 3yo's seat??

cheesesarnie · 23/03/2009 22:51

we have this for ds2 aged 3.i much prefer it to what ever it was we had before!

can i ask does anyone know when you remove head cushion though?is it age 4?ds is looking squashed!but maybe i just need to higher it?

claret1980 · 23/03/2009 22:52

I have one for my son who was 12 months. It is perfect and he cannot get his arms out of the straps as he could with others.

He still has loads of room in it. The best by far. Have had a couple of Britax car seats and can't fault them.

I got mine when I did a review for Mother & baby magazine in 2008.

sazm · 23/03/2009 23:00

cheese sarnie, you dont remove it,theres a wwee handle at the back of the seat headrest, i think you need to take it out the car to adjust it tho,
i used to find it easier to sit it against the wall in the living room and put lo in it then adjust the height and re-fit it,as the headrest also adjusts the height of the harness,

kitkatqueen · 23/03/2009 23:01

I have a 1-2-3 and a 2-3, I ditched the graco dd1 was using because compared to the evolva the side impact protection was rubbish.

The best advice I had was from the carseat lady in toys r us. Very knowledgable and had a dd of her own, she came out and checked the correct fit of all my carseats, not just the ones bought from her. She said she couldn't in concience allow another child to use a seat that she wouldn't be happy for her daughter to use.

very helpful.

FairMidden · 23/03/2009 23:12

I really like it - DS is chunky for his age and it fits him snugly and feels really secure, and he likes it. Very pleased with it.

trixymalixy · 23/03/2009 23:20

It was reviewed a while ago on Which, but they have recently updated the review and the old ones have gone.

IIRC it did well on the safety front, but not so well on ease of use. We've never had a problem with ours though.

cheesesarnie · 23/03/2009 23:20

thanks!

stressed2007 · 24/03/2009 20:59

confused now - what is the general concensus that the Britax hi liner is better then the evolva 123?

OP posts:
sazm · 25/03/2009 19:49

i've had both, and personally i didnt like the idea of using the 1-2-3 with just the seat belt,as its MUCH heavier than the hi-liner,so i would have though in an accident thats not so safe?
my 2 older kids are both in hi-liners,and i cant fault them at all,

LIZS · 25/03/2009 20:02

We've had one for dd to tied us over before she was 15kg . Used with harness now with seat belt . It is very stable but bulkier and heavier than most 2/3 seats so not ideal if you need to shift between cars or to get 3 across. As a Stage 1(harness) seat it requires a lot of seat belt length and doesn't fit all types of car easily.
