Boilers - really exciting subject!

Our central heating needs rather an overhaul - we get a horrendous vibration noise from it every time the hot water comes on. Have put up with it for too long.

Also now we have a radiator that comes on when its turned off at the valve plus several that come on with just the hotwater on unless they are turned off at their valves.

And today I noticed that one of our radiators valves is leaking. Have been noticing a damp patch on and off for a while but didnt connect it with the radiator

Anyway, with all that, we figured that it might be just as well to get quotes for a new boiler but I don't know what to ask for or which ones are supposed to be efficient or anything. [clueless]

So talk to me about boilers please

Prepare to be shocked to your core at the expense of the darn things.

We went for a Valient (it's called eco-tec or something) and it does the job. Do you know a local plumber who can come round for a quote and talk you through options?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2009 18:00

Our neighbours have had some one in that they really recommend. I think you are probably right, get him to talk through the options and see what is actually viable before choosing one!

thanks

We got the same one as TheOldestCat. Three different plumbers/engineers recommended.

we have a megaflow system. all i know is that we have hot water all the time and my husband reckons its the bobby. but other than that, cant really recommend anything!

we were looking into these also - combi boilers i thought were the thing but have been advised ok if only 2-3 but fam of 4 upwards a conventional boiler is the ticket - all keep going on about worcester bosch or something like that.......

Umlellala · 22/03/2009 19:46

we are in a flat so maybe that's why? worcester! that's the other name i was thinking of

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2009 20:19

Cool - thanks. I'll keep an ear out for those ones

completely conflicting to what i said earleir we just had a boiler man round as looking at extending and he told us a combi boiler best for us and mentioned something that sounded like an eco tec - i am completely baffled too now! We live in an average sized abode.....

Umlellala · 23/03/2009 19:44

Well, we are large flat of 3 beds Ecotec 831 or something.

We've recently got a Worcester Bosch it's been great and seemed to be very highly recommended. We deliberately did not get a combi boiler because we tend to get power-cuts in the winter - a boiler won't work with the electricity off because of the controls, but if you have a tank full of hot water you're not stuck for water anyway, thoguh your radiators still wont work without the pump.
