Square dining table?

I need a table for a smallish room off the kitchen (I suppose you'd call it a breakfast room although it's the only room we have a dining table in). I think the best use of space would be to get a square table that seats 2 people on each side, which also extends to allow another 2 if necessary. Has anybody seen such a thing? I can only find rectangular, circular or smaller squares.

Thanks!

A table that sits 2 on each side = 8 in total?

I think that makes for a very wide table that uses a lot of space up, which is why you won't find many on the market.

What are the dimensions of your room?

AllBuggiedOut · 22/03/2009 14:29

Yes, that is what I mean.

The room is a bit odd 'cos it's also a corridor between the hall and the kitchen. It's about 220cm wide, and excluding the corridor bit 210cm long. But if you didn't mind squashing through the corridor bit there's almost another 100cm. You couldn't do that all the time, but could on the rare occasions we've more than 8 people eating, hence the need to extend the table. Does that make sense?!

Would round not be more efficient?

BonsoirAnna · 22/03/2009 14:34

How many people will regularly be eating around the table?

AllBuggiedOut · 22/03/2009 16:04

We are 5, we often have my family over which makes us 8, and if friends with kids come it's 9 or 10.

The rest of the room doesn't have to be for anything else - so wouldn't square be more efficient than round as it uses more of the space? You could also put a straight bench along one side to cram lots of smallies onto if needed.

I have a table from Ikea that could sit 2 kids at each side, but would be too "cosy" for two adults on each side. It also has two bits underneath that pull out to make it a little bigger. Not sure about sitting 10, but I have two toddlers in high chairs, 4 school age children and me at it (when extended) on a regular basis and its fine. Bench would def be great and Im considering getting one myself!

this is it

Would be more of squeeze with corridor but they also have a bigger version here

That square one wold definitely be too small, and the problem with a rectangular one is that there's wasted space - would be far better in my space to seat 2 on each side comfortably. I might try bespoke, Was wondering, but really want cheap and cheerful as eventually I hope to move the rooms around and have a proper dining room.

Lmccrean, we have that same table (I think) and I love it. I'd really like to get 2 kids on one side...what chairs do you have? do they (the chairs that is) fit properly under? I'd like to get 2 in the back and still be able to push the table against the wall if that makes sense...had been thinking of a benchy thing??

Lmccrean · 23/03/2009 22:42

I have IVAR (i think!) chairs £12 or something silly like that, but no, when pushed together they are too wide by about 4cm, to fit between the legs. Did think when buying them, but if you find any let me know as I need new chairs.

I have an Ikea one LEKSVIK 100cmx120cm, it is a fat rectangle shape so it fits comfortably 2 on each long side plus one on each short side, for big meals you can easily seat an extra child or small person on the short side too, round stools make this easier, if needed you could also squeeze another child on the long sides agan on a round stool as you would struggle to fit in third chair.

So 6 comfortably, loads of room in the middle for serving dishes.
8 easily still with room in the middle.
10 at a freindly squeeze with a bit of an overlap, but still room for glasses and condiments (love that word )
Can do 12 by adding a desk which is the same height and sits alongside, meaning combined tables seat 3 along each side and room for turkey plus trimmings in the middle.

Or buy a cheap base like Ivar and get a table top made to order from a joiner, screw onto base.
