Are goose down duvets much better than hollowfibre?

I have some vouchers for the White Company arriving soon (courtesy of a MN competition - Yay!!) so have decided to treat myself to some lovely new bedding. But it all adds up pretty quickly and I have found too many things I want!

So is it really worth getting the goose down duvet and pillows or are the hollowfibre ones that they do likely to be just as good?
I really want a lovely soft fluffy one that drapes in around you and snuggles you to sleep! I hate it when my current horrible duvet goes straight from dp to me and we're left with a big gap between us, I need a lovely drapey one!
But they are much more expensive which is fine if they really are worth the extra money but if the hollowfibre ones are just as good than that means I can get a throw as well!

TIA

Apologies for over use of the red nose smileys , I think I am over-compensating for ds1's school making them go in full school uniform today with just "funny socks"

I don't know whether the synthetic duvets I have slept under were hollowfibre or something else, but I have never found that a synthetic duvet has that lovely, cuddley, drape.

If I'm not mistaken, my current sleeping bag is hollowfibre and it doesn't drape nearly as well as my previous, down, bag. It's good, but doesn't quite do it.

The big advantage of synthetic is that they are more easily washable, and are better if you suffer allergies.

OTOH, there's nothing like down for warmth, lightness, and comfort.

goose down all the way, it's magical. I was lucky enough to get one for my 30th birthday and NOTHING could make me give it up.

Oh! I didn't even notice that we have Rednose smileys!

Just treated myself to goosedown and it is lovely. Very snuggly!

Don't want to make you jealous but I priced Hungarian goose down pillows in Debenhams and they were around 80 euros each. I bought them here in Hungary for 12 euros each! There are benefits to living in Budapest.

Thank you for all your replies.

Looks like down it is then! DS2 has eczema so a down duvet will make a very good reason to keep him out of my bed I think!

Buda - very of the prices there. The Hungarian goose down duvets are out of my price range even with the vouchers!

Getting quite excited now! I might actually make it to bed before midnight if I have a lovely snuggly bed to go too!!

Thank goodness you've decided on down. You simply cannot beat the feel of a proper feather duvet.

Hey - nice excuse for trip to Hungary to buy the stuff1

nicolamumof3 · 13/03/2009 16:46

oh yes goosedown all the way over here too!!

SparkyToo · 13/03/2009 19:53

Definitely go for the goose down. I have one of these down duvets and they really are to die for!

LadyPinkofPinkerton · 13/03/2009 19:58

Down duvets always seem to be heavier and therefore drape over you better. DH and I also have a kingsize on our double bed so it hangs over the edge and nobody ever gets chilly. Plenty of duvet all round

ABetaDad · 13/03/2009 19:58

What about allergy issues? Are hollow fibre more hypoallergenic? Does hollow fibre go in the washing machine when goose down has to be dry cleaned?

Coldtits · 13/03/2009 20:01

They are lovely but they are loud. very warm, very heavy. I have a goosedown one for winter (I bought it from a local outlet shop for £15 - it's a silentnight one - yes, yes I am gloating) but for the summer I like my hollowfibre cheap one that doens't make me too hot.

warthog · 13/03/2009 20:02

i bought a silk duvet for us and we LOVE it! dh was always too hot, me too cold and now we're both happy as clams. never looked back.

so if i were you, i'd buy some new linen to go on your new silk duvet

Search the net to find out how your "snugly" down duvet filling is acquired ! I used to love hotel duvets too until I saw the horrific way the feathers are ripped from the birds chests, time and time again each time the feathers grow back.I love snuggling into my microfibre duvet and pillows at night now, feeling happy and contented that I've made one small alteration to my nights sleep.Although I can still see images of those innocent birds suffering.
