I need to get a duvet for my daughters first bed - any idea what type and what number of tog would be suitable? Thanks

Ds has the cheapest feather Ikea duvet, it is 4.5 tog and was about 7 quid, it washes brilliantly and he is always warm enough, (and our house is freezing). I wouldn't get anything fancy, don't forget it is likely to get wee'd and puked on, on a fairly regular basis.

Ds's 4.5 tog duvet is MUCH too hot for him - having to make do with cotton cot blanket and cot quilt the wrong way around with the duvet just over his feet!

NOT FEATHER, cos you can't wash them. TBH for a first bed I'd get fairly cheap & cheerful, and buy 2, so you have got a spare when one needs washing (they take AGES to get properly dry, need to air for a few hours even after tumble drying). It really helps to have a spare if you need to change the bed in the middle of the night.

My feather duvets wash brillaintly clumsymum, all my duvets are feather or down, synthetics are all sweaty and horrible imo.

great thoughts thanks - I think the IKEA one will only fit their beds though (at least that is the case with the sheets not sure about the divets) - or am I wrong?

Ds (who is 4.6) is still in a cot bed (made into a bed iyswim) and the Ikea duvet is a single size, so it's very big on the bed, but that way there is more to snuggle into. It fit's all my standard single duvet covers fine.

mistlethrush · 11/03/2009 10:42

Its only the Ikea sheets that are smaller - the duvets and duvet covers are standard single size (that's what ds has!)

Go for a fibre filled (ie washable!) one in a 4 or 4.5 tog.

Duneln Mill has them and they are very good quality and cheap! They also have the smaller size junior pillows too.

Mothercare ones nice but are more expensive.

I was going to buy a single duck feather and down duvet and then get the tailor down the road to make it smaller to fit the cotbed because I wanted a nice cosy duvet. I then came across this one on amazon. Perfect!
