Trying to decide re SatNav, and is it mad if I have it on my phone? Help!

I just got a nokia XpressMusic phone which seems to have satnav on it - but I haven't figured it out yet. It doesn't seem to talk to you, I dunno how well the battery would hold up on long journeys in the car, and I dunno if you would have to connect to the internet to get better maps (which would cost a fortune from my phone.) Does anyone have satnav on a phone - is it worth using?

Here are the two I've been looking at;

navigo - £45

and

Tom Tom £87

I only want it to get me from a to b in the UK, not arsed whether it can do clever things like phone my friends or play mp3s. I do want to be able to update the maps and not have to replace it for a good few years. I know nothing about satnavs - is the tomtom worth the extra cash? Can I update the maps on the navigo one free of charge? And are they all rechargeable, and how long does hte battery last if you were going on a very long journey?

Any advice gratefully received!

not an expert by any means, but I impulse purchased the tomtom in a fit of panic about driving for my new job.

I think it's great - it's so simple, and you don't need to pore over a manual to work out how to get it working. I just wish it would find parking spaces for me as well.

I have an iPhone with sat nav but it is not really suitable as an alternative to a proper sat nav.

'Twas fab when I got lost in the woods recently as I found my way home but that was on foot.

We bought the TomTom last year, I find it easy to use and quite reliable. (We have the larger TomTom as we do a lot of travelling, all over Europe).

My parents have a Garmin one and are happy with it, I have used it too and found it not as good as the TomTom but ok for the occasional journey.

Thank you for the feedback! I have to say am quite tempted by the Tom Tom but can't decide if it's worth an extra £37? It's almost double!

Do you think the Tom TOm would last forever? Or at least until I lose it/have it nicked out of the car?

All need to be plugged in in the car, really. Haggle and you should get a car power supply thrown in.

The ones on 'phones are rubbish, generally.

I have a Garmin - recommended as being less likely to randomly crash than TomTom - it takes for ever to start up but is then fine.

Never heard of the navigo.

You can get silly voices for the TomTom, but TBH I always turn the voice off anyway.

the silly voice thing is exactly the sort of gimmick that would probably sway me, am very fickle.

We have the Queen, the kids love it when she says,

One has reached one's destination

I was about to just go for the Tom Tom, but then I read a lot of reviews on amazon which are split 50/50 and have put me off a bit.

God, I hate making decisions.

Hamg on - if there isn't a cigarette lighter in my van, can I not use a sat nav?
