My ds is 7.5 months. At the moment, we use the Tommee Tippee easiflow cup but it is dependent on him sucking and I would like to get him into the habit of drinking, if you know what I mean? Any recommendations?

Just keep offering it, and one day they will "get it"... I didn't believe it myself, but lo and behold, one day she took a few sucks... She still won't really drink unless she's thirsty though.

She also won't take milk from it even if it's time for her milk. Still - I will continue trying!

But I also bought a soft spout heinz cup as well, because this "free flows" and you can keep tipping it in, and letting them experience that there's actually something inside the cup they might want to get at... I don't really like my avent magic cup, although she will drink from this, and I hate the anyway up cups, because you have to suck so hard (see another thread on this - apparently they are bad for teeth anyway)

I use her little tommy tippee cup all the time now, because it's easy to clean, only has two parts, flips down for travel, and she can hold it quite successfully with both hands, and sometimes even drink from it herself (8m 3 wks) but doesn't get that you have to tip it up...

We use a doidy cup from www.bickiepegs.co.uk to get over this sucking problem. It has no spiout, just a diagonal rim to make drinking from a cup easier.

Our ds always wanted to drink from our glass so we let him. I didn't let him hold it himself until he was about 12 mths but as soon as I did (plastic cups for him) he tipped it up straight away and drank from it. Naturally there was some spillage but very little considering it was his first time. He now drinks from one really well and when he's had enough is when he decides to tip a bit more into his mouth than he needs and spill it all down his front. That is the time to take it away. He does use a variety of cups/beakers like you have described as well but drinks very well from a cup.

Tommee Tippee sell a top that goes over their cups and lets a little bit of liquid out but not too much as a sort of bridge between the spout and a normal cup - problem is I've never actually seen it on sale anywhere.
We're just using a normal plastic cup for water and juice for our 6 month old - at least water doesn't stain. He's already pretty good at it and lowers it when he's had enough - it was a lot easier than I thought to get him used to it and he prefers it to the spouts on those cups.

I have heard that the Doidy cup mentioned is very good, I am planning to get a couple but has anyone else had any experience of them?
Our health visitor is very keen on them.

I bought the Doidy cup for my dd last year. It is an small angled cup which is supposed to be easier for the child to put down onto a table without spilling the contents. She used it a few times but would tip the contents out on purpose to see what it looked like on the table. She now drinks fine from a normal beaker. For the price a doidy cup cost plus post and package (as could only get it mail order) I personally don't think it was worth it.

The Doidy cup is great in my opinion. DD has used it since she was 4 months old for all her juice and water. She is now 12 months and can manage to drink from it on her own, bt still needs a bit of help picking it and putting down - so we don't get spills. We also have one at my parent's house, at Dh's parent's and at nursery, all of which are really impressed with them.

I have seen the doidy cup on the bickiepegs.co.uk website. It comes in lots of colours and costs £3.50

we got a doidy cup from www.kiddieskitchen.co.uk for £4.50 INC p&P which was a lot less than anywhere else we found.
