What happens if a new sofa doesn't fit through the front door?

Starting to worry now. It's coming on Wednesday.

Do you have sash windows?

Can you take the front door off its hinges?

Can you go in the back door (if it's bigger?)

You'll be amazed what these delivery guys can do.

At my brother;'s house they removed the windows(double glazing, the units can be popped out of the frames)

Do you have better access through the back -eg.patio doors?

We had to take the front door off the hinges in our old house -we just needed an extra couple of cms.

It was an incredibly narrow front door and hallway though (Victorian terrace).

why didnt you measure your door first?

They turn it vertical on its end and put the top of the back of the seat in first and then turn it so slightly so the seat goes through. Imagine threading an 'L' shape through a narrow gap.

They will get it in - I promise.

I had to abandon a sofa once because it wouldn't go through the door and up the stairs to my flat

We did measure the door.

Our old sofa went out easy enough stood on its end and twisted a bit. The height of the sofa on its end should fit but it is slightly wider so a little worried it won't bend round as easy.

No other door but have a big (non opening) window so popping the glass out would be the only option if it won't go in.

some delivery guys are better than others

we had a nightmare with a suite in our old house. They brought 2 seater in front door.. damaged the paint work, broke the panic button which set the alarm off and it wouldnt stop. We had to unscrew part of our bannister. We told them to bring 3 seater in the back door and they smashed the door on the way in.

All this from a well known name

The funniest thing was when we moved out the removers picked both up and carried them out the front door without thinking twice about it

We bought a sofa once before we moved to a new house and didn't measure the doors first. We panicked before the sofa turned up and tried to cancel the order.....the shop wouldn't let us. We ended up writing a letter saying we were sorry but the sofa wouldn't fit through the door, no access round the back (Victorian terrace) and we couldn't use the sash window into the room as it was on the first floor and there was a tree in the way as well. After much debate we were allowed to order a different sofa that would fit into the house.

I've been much more careful since then....I have enormous sofas now but they come to bits in order to be moved.

I bought a sofa once from Sofa Worshop. They had a measuring service where you paid them 30 quid or something to come round and check the access first. When they made the sofa they forgot to factor in that it was a sofa bed and it was now 10 cm too wide and wouldn't fit through the door.

The delivery guys were about to leave the sofa in the street until I kicked up a massive fuss. I still had to wait an hour while they sent another team of guys over who popped my sash windows out and hoisted the sofa up into the first floor (it was a flat). Thank god I wasn't higher up.

When I sold the flat I knew I couldn't get the sofa out and had to leave it there. I loved that sofa as well .

If I hadn't had the access check though, they would have just left me with a sofa in the street. I always play it safe now!

My friend orderedher sofas from M&S. When one of them wouldn't fit through the door they took it back, replaced it with a smaller one (2 seater as opposed to the 3 seater) and re-delivered. All for no extra cost. (And refunded the price difference between the two sofas).

My Sofa Workshop sofa on paper didn't fit in the house, I was freaking out and feeling stupider than I can describe. But the delivery men were amazing. I swear they bent the laws of physics. They managed to turn it at the weirdest angle and somehow squeeze it in and around, after taking 2 inch feet off. It's comfy as anything and I am so glad we chose it, nightmare as it was.

How the hell we'll ever get it OUT is another matter, though.

Your delivery guys will be professionals! Ours had to go back to the shop to be pulled apart and remade (!!!)

Don't think they'll be proffesionals from Argos though

i had same problem and they sent a bloke out to take off arms and reattach when in the house

I got ours in a very tiny gap by standing it on it's end and swivelling it in, like AbetaDad says. Scuffed all one side of it though.

We had sofas from M&S and had considered the bigger ones as they would have fitted in the room but the delivery guys who were fab said because of the layout they wouldn't have got bigger ones past the stairs and into the lounge.

My brother had to get his in by emptying the garage so the guys could take it through to the back of the house and in the back door.

We had to take our sash window out and hire a crane for ours (dp friend is crane man so didn't have to pay full amount).

Not sure when company delivers them though.

I seriously think it'll have to be the window coming pane out. The height of the door is only just as high as the sofa, according to the measurments in the catalogue. This is the sofa.

It looks like you can prise the feet off so that will lower it a bit, plus the seat cushions will not be on it, they could also take off the cover, it's amazing what 1/2inch or so will do.

It will fit!

make sure they try a variety of angles - some deliverymen are quite dense about pivoting. also if doors off hinges and its still not getting through you can get an exrtra inch by crowbarring off the door jamb/surround. it should actually be a very quick job for a builder to nail back on and touch up paint,
