our tv is about... 10 years old and it is a total piece of shit. Poor tv it isnt all his fault, 2 of our rabbits used to be house rabbits and had a very good go at the cord but it was senile before anyway. Now it takes about 5 minutes to come on & you have to turn it off & on off & on off & on both on the remote and on the actual tv and it is driving me crazy. DS is the only one who really uses it and that not all the time obviously, usually DH & I use the laptop. Still the one we have is pretty big I dont know the measurements & cant be bothered to get off the sofa just now but it looks about... the picture bit is about 24" - 30" maybe wide. So we dont want to go too much smaller. I would like something as cheap as possible, we are not into big tv systems here we just want something decent and serviceable. I would rather buy on the internet I think as well as our time we can go shopping is so short right now.

And I think I would rather have it new, I am looking at them used on ebay as well but to be honest I feel a bit nervous about buying a used tv with no warranty & site unseen etc. Thanks!

hereidrawtheline · 26/02/2009 16:51

so we dont have freeview or sky or anything like that, just 1-5. If you have freeview what channels do you get? And do I understand right that some new tv's come with freeview already in them?

We managed to get a ex-display Panasonic flat screen from commet, we managed to haggle the price down too so got a real bargain.

Always try and haggle .

VTVTVT · 26/02/2009 16:54

get a flatscreen with built in freeview

what is your budget?

ToiletRollCover · 26/02/2009 16:55

Most TVs now come with freeview built in. Depending on yur signal strength you should be able to get BBC3 BBC4 Film4 and CBeebies!!! Some more too but we don't get them all 'cos our signal is poo.

VTVTVT · 26/02/2009 16:56

And flatscreens dont have to be humungus things that take of the room

You can get a nice small one for around £150 - £200

And yes, they come with built in freeview tv

hereidrawtheline · 26/02/2009 16:59

cbeebees I love you.

I could maybe spend more but really we dont use it that much so I dont want to spend more than £200.

this one?

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 26/02/2009 17:02

this one's £240

hereidrawtheline · 26/02/2009 17:07

hecate I like how the first one you linked to it says "requires an adult to sign for on delivery" you know one too many 14 year olds have ordered big flat screens!

The first one is definitely too expensive for me the second one maybe! I am going to collect my short list & present it to DH for us to decide on together. I'm going to see how small you have to go to get one for £200 or a bit closer.

We got a Panasonic Viera 27" DV3

Very easy to use, good picture, etc.

hereidrawtheline · 26/02/2009 17:22

bigTillyMint I cant see a price on that one and also does it have freeview? Looks good though!

This is a reasonably good bargain from amazon.

audiovisual.kelkoo.co.uk/p-lcd-tvs-100311823/lg-m2294dpz-19583990

not sure if it comes with built in freeview - best check, but looks like one of the cheaper 22" ones - most in the price range up to 200quid are 19inches. I bought a samsung flat screen and have been very happy with it. Some people don't like the sound quality but its fine for me. I prefer picture to sony LCDs.

hereidrawtheline · 26/02/2009 17:36

what does piano black mean? like this one?

I got a 32" LG one from Dixons last week. It was £300, or just over £300. It works well and pic looks good to me.

mamamea · 26/02/2009 21:45

I wouldn't bother with used TVs. They are not that much cheaper.

This is the place go for all the geeky TV advice:

www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-tv-should-i-buy/

£200 is pushing it TBH.

I would avoid Goodmans, etc.

The Sony KDL32V4000U 32" was on sale for £300 at John Lewis on Boxing Day, and that is the best TV on sale for less than about £500.

Seems it now costs £400, so I'd recommend a post at avforums for some more up-to-date advice.
