Laptop or Netbook?

I'm going to get a new computer soon and was wondering which would be better. I only really use the computer for the internet and e-mail so had thought about one of those little netbook things. Only down side is the lack of CD or DVD drive.

Can anyone give me any advice on this.

Thanks

And the screen - if you have any eye sight issues
netbooks might be too small.

It also depends on what you actually want to do with the thing.

Example: I transfer my camcorder footage to my lappy and edit it.
Could not do that with a netbook.

That reminds me, I also have to invest in a new cam-corder. Mine is completely goosed. I had also thought, although I hardly use the disc drives on my computer just now, I'd probably miss not having them.

As regards drives you could always get an external one..
that's what I will do when I am good and ready for my next purchase!

I am actually waiting for a netvertible
i.e. a netbook that you can turn into a tablet PC.

It's the price that's tempting me as well. Which one do you have loopymumsy?

Thanks for that. I'll have a look to see what I can find.

I have the aspire as well. You can pay £50 extra to get windows which can be handy but Linux is fine too.

Great purchase and so easy to travel with.

Carmenere · 25/02/2009 12:25

I am a netbook convert. I LOVE my Acer aspire. And I love Linux, it is really easy and you can convert documents to Windows so there is no problem there. And you don't need anti virus software as they don't make viruses for Linux. Mine was about 200 but it has extra memory.
Oh and I can shove it in my handbag, soo much easier and lighter than a laptop.

gscrym · 25/02/2009 12:48

How do you convert documents to windows? Also is it possible to put things like I-Tunes on them?

am in love with my netbook

It arrived yesterday and I've been having a good old play. I chose that one because of the slightly larger screen and the really ling battery life.

gscrym · 25/02/2009 13:00

That one looks good OhYouBadBadkitten. Am quite tempted by those.

Its fabby bit hard on my eyes cos I've only got a couple of fixed focal lengths (eye probs) but I've found if I prop it on a couple of cushions on my lap and put my specs on its ace.

dh is going to be taking it away on business in a couple of weeks. oh how I will miss it already!

LadyOfWaffle · 25/02/2009 13:15

I love my netbook - the laptop is massive compared! Perfect to take to bed & MN And with the mobile broadband I can take it anywhere. Only thing is the tiny screen for some things.

ohdearwhatamess · 25/02/2009 14:00

I love my netbook (this one). Much easier to transport around the house, plonk on work surfaces in the kitchen, whisk away from little hands, etc. Battery lasts much, much longer than my laptop, and it takes next to no time to get going when you turn it on.

Only downside is the tiny screen. Took about a week or so for my eyes to adjust and not hurt when using it (but I have very bad eyes, so that might not be a problem for others).
