she said she gets 25yr guarantee on it etc.but is that really a reasonable price....she also gets a year's "free" services contract-can't remember exactly which plan she's on already.

Our new Worcester Bosch boiler is certainly not more efficient than our old one, in spite of what everyone told us! See my thread here

cutekids · 02/03/2009 11:50

well wasn't going to tell mum about what's been said on here as i knew it would get her all worked up.however, someone else told her they were having a boiler fitted and told her how much she was paying.mum said that this woman had been shocked at how much mum was paying with BG.At this point,I mentioned this thread. She feels she can't come out of the contract now as she doesn't want to be "penalised" (plus, she's paid the deposit!).Unfortunately, she cancelled another quote-from the company who fitted her previous one.Anyway, thanks everyone for your input.Don't think she'll change her mind now though.

just getting on this as want a new boiler and been looking at WB ones

hanifla · 25/03/2009 23:51

Does anybody know the cost for ahhhh! I need to move boiler and move bathroom plumbing to smaller room to make huge bathroom into double bedroom and move bathroom to smaller room. It is a victorian house with sash windows and I also have been told it needs a damp course and electric fuse box replacing and the gas meter needs grounding? Any idea on price, and work involved I live in York. Really appreciate somebody getting back to me who has done similar thing. There are already rods in the bay window? Oh dear...

islandofsodor · 25/03/2009 23:58

I'd guess at a figure of about £2,000 for a Worcester. We are not one of the cheapest firms around for this sort of thing but we are highly experienced and cheaper than British Gas.

If we quote it is a fixed and the price does not change unless a customer wants anything extra or different once the job has started.

MollieO · 26/03/2009 00:25

Ponders makes a very good point. I can't see how BG can provide a 25 yr guarantee. I reckon if you read the small print it will say something like so long as the parts are available. I have a Potterton combi which is probably at least 16 yrs old. About two years ago I started getting letters from BG saying that Potterton are no longer manufacturing parts. I'm not bothered as because of BG's incompetence the only part of my boiler which is 16 yrs old is the casing. Everything else is about 3 yrs old, all replaced because they failed to spot that a solder had failed (even though I told them!).

I have a service contract with BG for convenience but I would never give them my money for a new boiler. I had building work done four years ago and got local plumber in to quote for a new boiler. He refused as he said there was nothing wrong with my existing one. Can you imagine BG doing the same?

stressed2007 · 26/03/2009 08:08

Would lovw to hear the name of the thermostat allowing you to set temperature for different days of the week - what is it called? Thanks

gusmust · 08/09/2009 14:17

I have a potterton boiler which is now 40 years old and has never gone wrong (touch wood several times). Have a contract with BG who like others on here have been told they cant repalce any parts and it is very inefficient and expensive anyway.
I have been looking at what to replace it with if i did as I have noticed the radiators do not get very hot now. If i replace it I have been advised by my son to get a bosch. The boiler is located in the kitchen and the flue goes through the middle of the house too the ridge on the roof. I want to leave any new boiler in the same place. i have also been told that if I get a combi boiler I may need to repace the pipe work because of the pressure. I was thinking of upgrading the radiators anyway. But changing the pipe work would mean all kinds of upheaval.

WebDude · 12/09/2009 14:19

One possible problem with radiators not getting hot is the build-up of a sort of sludge in the pipework.

Have moved into my late Mum's home and will probably need to do something (micro bore pipes so they can sometimes give a poor flow, and worse if any blockages).

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 12/09/2009 14:34

BG is way more expensive than anyone else.

we were quoted about that.

Told them to bog off

ignore the "free" cover, it isn't free.

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 12/09/2009 14:36

This thread is so old I have posted on it twice.

LyraSilvertongue · 12/09/2009 14:38

We had a Worcester Bosch installed last year. It cost £2,800 (we are in SW London) but then we had it moved upstairs and there was a lot of pipework to do.
For just a straight replacement, I wouldn't expect to pay more than around £1,500.
British Gas are ripping off your mum, OP.

LyraSilvertongue · 12/09/2009 14:41

Oh, didn't realise it was so old. Why has someone revived it?

WebDude · 12/09/2009 17:40

Someone (before me) has revived it because it is 'current' to their needs to get advice.

One minor point for anyone who didn't know - the government registration body is no longer CORGI but the Gas Safe Register

The CORGI website (trustcorgi.com) does give a link and phone number for the GSR on the page for tradesmen planning to become members.

However, the 'Home Owners' page says "Ask for CORGI" and makes little or no mention of the Gas Safe Register (on the pages I looked at).

The "About Us" page says how they've had a long history of safety monitoring and makes no mention that this registration task is now carried out by another organisation, so (vulnerable) people could be forgiven if some cowboy claims to be registered with CORGI and the householder isn't aware of the change.

Oh dear, ok some free advice from a plumber on boilers. Firsty BG mainly install Worcester Bosch boilers reason being is the reliabilty of the product. BG don't actually install a fair percentage of the boilers they sell, it's all sub contracted. Most boilers on the market come with a minimum warranty of 2 years subject to you getting it serviced yearly. From experience all heating systems will need upgrading in some way or another to comply with current buiding regulations, whether it be a time clock, room thermostat, thermostatic radiator valves, gas pipework or insulating exposed pipe work. All heating systems have to be thoroughly cleaned out before a new condensing boiler is fitted otherwise the warranties are null and void. Finally all gas installation work is notifiable to big brother who then sends you a certificate independent of the person who install the gas appliance. This is for the following reasons (1) the work can be inspected independently (2) you will need the certificate if and when you decide to sell the property as it forms part of the HIPS.
Any plumber who say's he will supply and fit a Worcester Bosch boiler for £1500 does not sound right, most plumbers will be VAT registered for a start that takes care of 17.5% £262.50 then allow for materials say £1100 this for boiler, flue, time clock, room thermostat and pipe work, not to mention his overheads ie public liability, van, advertising. If he is on his own if he does the job properly from begining to end, he will be in your property a minimum of between 1 1/2 to 2 days.
What some of you guys should do is consider the whole package, not just in the short term is it better to spend £1500 - £1700 now and then again in 4 or 5 years time once the Aristons and Biasis have started to leak or do you spend £2000 - £2300 and not have to worry about anything for 8 or 10 years? The other thing to consider when having a boiler installed is how good the manufacturers are when things go wrong.. Telephone Worcester Bosch at 8 or 9 at night and someone will answer the phone within 3 or 4 rings no listening to music for twenty minutes. Call all the manufacturers on a Sunday lunchtime and see which one answers, Which boiler manufacter will have a service agent on your doorstep within 24hrs? All these things you need to consider before you part with your money. And no I don't work for Worcester Bosch, but the one thing that is used more than anything else in your homes is the boiler and so reliabilty, quality and customer service should be foremost in your thoughts rather than just that white box on the wall....

WebDude · 29/12/2009 17:56

Thanks for the informative post, plumberwhoknows.

I'm likely to need a new boiler in the next year (microbore pipework, house empty for 10 years, roof leaks etc, etc, meaning fair number of things need replacement/repair), though have to say that whether one needs work in 3/4 or 8 years, the one thing that can be guaranteed is that the cost will be higher!

puss1 · 04/01/2010 21:22

no it to expensive try warm front it may take a while but we got a new boiler and power flush for nothing and a gaurentee! they coem and visit the house do a survey then check bills/benefits etc.Doesnt matter if you get benifits or not but you could get all this for nothing we have and are now just waiting for the cavity wall insulation.that way you dont have to spend out that much. Worth checking them out!!
a new boiler would be about £2500,00 ish.Ring round and check for gas safe certificate to!! good luck

TheYoungVisitor / Ohforfoxsake / others in London
I really need a trusted plumber urgently in S. London to look at or replace my elderly dad's boiler. He has had one cowboy after another (including British Gas) charging him a fortune to look at it but do nothing and some who 'pretended' to do a power flush and others who made outrageous quotes for new boilers. I am so upset. Can you recommend me a person you sincerely trust to be honest and competent and give him a quote for repairing or installing a new boiler or combi system? Thank you very much in advance for your help.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 19/03/2011 08:23

You'd be far better off starting your own thread - this is over a year old!

shnedders · 26/06/2014 16:00

Try getting a boiler quote from www.myboilerquote.co.uk . Not sure they cover London although i am aware they will be doing so if not already

Inka1957 · 24/03/2015 10:27

We moved into a new house where the builders had fitted a really poor quality boiler (as in all adjoining houses) We took out a homecare agreement with British Gas and recently had frequent call outs to get the boiler working properly. British Gas quoted £3000 for a new boiler but then offered a £700 discount. We went along with this and recken at that price we have fair value as against a local contracor. And British Gas waive any payments on homecare for a year. Our experience with BG has been quite positive.

Bonniegirl18 · 04/02/2016 11:58

We paid over £4000 for british Gas to install Worcester Bosch boiler January 2015. We got free cover for one year. We were under the impression it had a two year guarantee ( stated on card from BG). This was misleading as today I have spoken to Worcester Bosch who say 2 year guarantee is only applicable to other installers NOT British Gas. I feel overcharged and let down by British Gas and would definitely query 25 year guarantee.

MissWimpyDimple · 09/04/2016 18:27

They are expensive, but I work in property and deal with boilers a lot and around £2,200 is usual in this area, that's going to be a cheaper one.
