Frustrated clothes shopper

Does anyone else get frustrated trying to buy clothes for their children? I'm sure my 20 month DS is not paricularly short for his age, in fact he seems quite tall, but I have to buy him trousers for much younger childen as the leg lengths for his age group are ridiculous. The trousers up to 24 months would still fit him this time next year! Not all shops are too bad but Boots and M&S seem to be the main culprits.
Is it just me?

Same here - my 19 month old is only now starting to wear his British-bought 12-18 month trousers, but he definately needs 18-24 month (or sometimes bigger) tops - with the exception of H&M where 9-12 month size tops still fit well. Funnily enough when I buy him things from Canada, which I do quite a bit, the fit is quite accurate - so that coincides with what Batters says about Gymboree (an American make). The continental system of selling by height rather than age also seems to be more accurate on the whole.

Yes batters,
Tescos is very bad for length, and the size of the waist. They are huge !!

XAusted · 06/04/2003 14:42

It's annoying when people buy clothes as presents for the kids in what they think is the appropriate size but they're way too big. Tesco definitely the worst IME, but Adams also way out on size of toddlers!

I find that my 20 (nearly 21) months ds has to wear 12-18m Next trousers, but 2-3yr tops! I agree that Tesco trousers are terrible for size, his 12-18m trousers are still too large. I thought that ds was just a stumpy legs, but if you all say the same, then I feel better! I find that Gap clothes (only bought in the sale BTW!) are on the small side.

My mum made the charming comment that dd must have "unnaturally short arms", as all her tops nicely fit her slim body but the sleeves dangle past her hands !

lucy123 · 06/04/2003 21:01

yes! It's even worse here in Spain, where (cheap)clothes manufacturers seem to think that their customers have baby monkeys to dress.

It's all made even worse by the fact that dd has enormous cloth nappies so i have to buy a size too big. But maybe she does have unnaturally short arms!

I was sent a very twee outfit by a French friend when dd was born - quite old-fashioned but Ok on some kids I suppose. Except it was size 3 - 6 months and it didn't even fit when she was first born - and she was just over 2 weeks early!! Other French people I know say that kids' clothes there are notoriously tiny compared to the UK

I can remember when dd was born we were given a pink dungaree type set from Marks and Spencers. It was for ages 0-3 months. She was 4 and a half months before we could put it on her and even then it lasted her until she was about 8 months old. I find M&S clothes really big, also trousers from Mothercare always seem to long. Tops I don't worry about as I can roll up the sleeves and that doesn't bother dd but you can't always roll up trousers.
I have had the opposite problem with Adams though. Every time I buy somthing from Adams it seems to shrink within about 3 weeks of buying it. I've now stopped buying from them. Can't work out what it is, none of the other clothes dd has shrink in the wash only the ones from Adams and that is even after buying a size to big just to see if it was something I was doing, nope it still shrunk in the wash.
Has anyone else had this problem?
In saying all of that I've found clothes from gymboree brilliant fits and also some clothes that we bought in Canada were great as well.
