If you have a Dualit toaster would you recommend it/ ever buy another one. Which one do you have? I am about to ask for one for my birthday as our old toaster finally packed up this morning.
Which one?

i have just bought a vario (the third one you link to) and it's relly lovely.

I am not sure about the whole newGen thing tbh. some of the features are on the vario anyway, like choosing the number of slots. mine can use 2 or 4 at a time.

the vario can also fit bagels/teacakes etc in it.

so not entirely sure what you pay the extra for???

fwiw I got mine from barnitts which FAQ helpfully found for me when searching for the cheapest. they were really good. cheapest price, quick delivery. no probs at all.

oh, and I love it. but i've only had it for about a week

flippineck · 23/02/2009 12:18

I've got the one in your second link, the 45002 (but in black, I'm sure that'll make a difference!), and I'm really pleased with it. Disclaimer though - we've only had it about 4 weeks, and I haven't managed to test bagels yet! Does standard toast evenly and quickly, whether there's one slice or four.

thisisyesterday · 23/02/2009 12:18

sorry, just seen that JL are selling newgen for same price as vario. in which case I have no idea! maybe the new one in case it has features that aren't obviouis????

stealthsquiggle · 23/02/2009 12:18

None of the above.

this one

diedandgonetodevon · 23/02/2009 12:19

We have the last one (had it for some years) and it's very good. Would definitely buy a new one if this one ever packs up.

whyarefamiliessodifficult · 23/02/2009 12:20

I have a Dualit, probably a Vario, looking at those pictures.

it is fab, love it, have had it about 4 years now, and still going strong.

It toasts nice and evenly, but I would say that the slots are not as deep as the could be, so if you have "all" bread, you do get an untoasted bit, iyswim.

flippineck · 23/02/2009 12:20

I meant to say that the reason we chose that one over any of the others is the space it takes up on the work counter - the long narrow(ish) shape is a better use of the space in our kitchen than the square ones, iyswim.

whyarefamiliessodifficult · 23/02/2009 12:20

oops, that should be "tall" breadd

FAQinglovely · 23/02/2009 12:21

ooooo you got it then thisisyesterday (I'm still loving my bin LOL)

Purplemoon · 23/02/2009 12:22

Wow, fab link TIY! That's a massive saving!! Thank you . Have you had any probs with the keep warm function, I read a review somewhere that reckoned it was just an excuse for not pooping up when the bread was the right level of browning? Hadn't realised up until then that they didn't pop up

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 23/02/2009 12:24

well, I suppose technically it does keep it warm as it's still down in the toaster, but not for a very long time.
that said ours tends to come straight out and get eaten up lol

muffle · 23/02/2009 12:25

Yes we have the one in your first link. I love it though it takes a bit of getting used to and cooks fast - it seems hotter than other toasters I've had and if you let it go too long, it really burns. The handle thing is great as you can really SPROINGGG! your toast out into the air at high speed. Also looks beautiful, though ours needs a clean come to think of it... anyway yes I would recommend.

Purplemoon · 23/02/2009 12:26

God I'm so slow, just seen all the repies that appeared while I replied! Flippineck, that was my main reason for looking at the second one too, have to admit have previously hankered after the other sort though. I can't believe I am really considering asking DH to part with so much...(Less convinces I will be able to persuade him, but I need one lol!!)

stealthsquiggle · 23/02/2009 12:26

[ahem]

have a look at my link - some prices seem to be even better than TIY's (depends on which model). Free next day delivery and v. reliable - reputable supplier to caterers, etc (we buy all most kitchen stuff from them)

stealthsquiggle · 23/02/2009 12:27

and if you need help on the cost argument - our is 10+ years old and good as new.

the second one, the "lite" model though i think is really just like any other toaster you could buy iyswim?
I am not sure it has the same advantages as the vario and newgen. ie, i don't think it has the "pro-heat" replaceable elements and all that kind of stuff, it's more dualits version of a standard toaster.
does that make sense??

Purplemoon · 23/02/2009 12:32

Sorry SS, wasn't ignoring you. I love your toaster... I may just show DH this thread to persuade him

OP posts:
Purplemoon · 23/02/2009 12:34

Yes, I wondered if that was the case TIY. I do love the vario... How can I love a toaster???? . I think I must have finally flipped...

stealthsquiggle · 23/02/2009 12:34

A friend and I came close to building a 'cost per slice over 15 years' spreadsheet model to convince her DH (he caved just in time )

thisisyesterday · 23/02/2009 12:36

pmsl stealth.
I told dp I wantd one and that it would cost £120 and he was all like "oh, that sounds reasonable"

and I was just like, well, it's not really is it? I mean, it's £120 for a flippin TOASTER. it's pretty UNreasoanble really.

but we got it anyway haha
and like you say, if you never have to replace it then you're saving money long term. that's what we tell ourselves anyway lol

Purplemoon · 23/02/2009 12:36

ROFL!! Do you have the spreadsheet handy SS, it may come in very useful!

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 23/02/2009 12:36

I would be v. wary of that second one for exactly the reasons TIY says - our Dualit branded kettle (bought based on toaster experience) was rubbish and that looks to me to be the same thing - Dualit branded, rather than Dualit commercial-grade manufactured.

stealthsquiggle · 23/02/2009 12:39

We never actually built the spreadsheet in the end but the sums are something along the lines of:

Cheapy toaster costs ~£20
The longest any cheap toaster has ever lasted in our house was 2 years.

Our Dualit cost ~£120

It has already lasted (about) 12 years and shows no sign of giving up - and even if components do fail they can be replaced.

Hence it is cheaper

Purplemoon · 23/02/2009 12:43

Stealth you're good... if I have any trouble persuading DH will you come round?!lol! TIY, what sort of guarantee do Barnitts offer on their dualits?
