What sort of bed should I get for a 2 year old?

DD is just 2 and I'd like her to move from her cot to bed. She doesn't tend to move around a lot in the night, and already sleeps with blankets and a pillow.

I was all set to get a 3ft divan (with drawers) and knew that I needed to get a soft mattress but have just been to John Lewis and been told that the ONLY option is one of their special 'Prelude' mattresses which MUST go on the special 'Prelude' base, which is a padded base with legs - ie no drawers and about 6 inches lower than a normal bed.

When I asked why she couldn't have a divan, or why the Prelude mattress couldn't go onto a normal divan base I was told that this would be 'considered too hard' and 'would be too high'. So no alternative option.

Can anyone else advise me, please, as I went to JL a couple of months ago and the guy there was happy to talk about a divan and didn't mention any of this, and neither did the people in Dreams either when I had a quick chat to them last year (we were replacing our bed then - I don't just stalk bed showrooms!)

They're just trying to sell their prelude. Clearly.

Besides, your DD will soon find out she can crawl into your bed at 3 in the morning anyway, so the type of mattress she has soon becomes irrelevant!!

I would just get an ordinary divan, put it up against the wall and put a bedguard on the other side. It is nice if you can get into bed with a 2yo if they wnat to cuddle etc.

although I would be careful with the height - how tall is your DD? My DS is very tall so I didn't mind a high divan. Not that he sleeps in it though ,prefers our bed!

Why a soft mattress? All of ours just had teh cheapest mattress I could buy (until they stopped wetting hte bed/ were big enough to get to teh bathroom if they needed to throw up in the night).

TBH a cot has a much firmer mattress than any bed mattress I know.

thanks to all - confirmed what I thought, but didn't expect such a hard sell from John Lewis!!
Re soft mattress, the Dreams people did say 'the cheapest mattress you can find' because they generally are softer.
DD tall for age and can get off of our bed ok and that's a very high divan, hence my thinking that she really doesn't need an especially low bed.
Still puzzled at JL basically saying they won't sell me anything else! Looks like it's Dreams then!
