To BUMBO or not to bumbo ???

DD2, 6 months is desperate to sit up. She HATES lying down and is only happy when sat on someone's knee, standing on said knee, being carried or, for short periods of time, in her IKEA Antilop high cahir. Am wondering if a bumbo might be a good idea for her as she would then be close to the floor and able to sit up and play with her toys and watch DD1 play with her Thomas TTE track etc. Any ideas ??

Are they okay for babies' backs ? Are they worth the money ?

Don't see the point myself: she'll probably only really need it for about 3 weeks.

But they don't cause any problems, AFAIK

blametheparents · 20/02/2009 17:08

Prob a bit late for one now, as gizmo has said she won't been it for very long.
They are also pretty expensive secondhand.
DD loved hers, but was a bit younger when she used it

LadyPinkofPinkerton · 20/02/2009 17:09

Both Ds's loved the Bumbo. It is good support for their back as it goes high up.

MollieO · 20/02/2009 17:20

ds loved his. He couldn't sit up unaided until 10.5 mths so it got lots of use

Another vote for bumbos here - it's true, you don't use them for very long and we had ds2 in it at younger than 6 months, so maybe try and get one on e-bay?

Sazlocks · 20/02/2009 17:22

MY DS hated his too - we only used it about 4 times so I wish I had tried one before I bought one.

bumbling · 20/02/2009 17:23

DON'T DO it! It's so expensive I'd say only do it if you can borrow or buy one really, really cheap. Or if you're loaded and don't care. DS loved it, for about four weeks and then it was all over. Ok maybe six, but neverthless. Huge to store too. Fortunatley I was given mine. He's now 3.5 and it's been to about six or seven homes since.

naturalblonde · 20/02/2009 17:26

I got one on ebay - it's a bebe pod, same thing though, and only £10 BNIB, seller was travelbaby2007, don't know if they have any left.

I'm glad I didn't spend £40 on one as my dd isn't that keen

snottymcgrotty · 20/02/2009 17:28

Thanks for all your quick replies. I am obviously hoping she'll be sitting on her own soonish, but with a todler as well, thought it might save my ears (and arms !) to be able to put her down to play with her sister while I prep tea or do the washing etc..... I have seen a couple on Ebay which are still at 99p so far !! Thought they might be worth it for so little. Would about £15 be reasonable for a 2nd hand one do you think ?

£15 would be reasonable I'd say. They really do last, pretty much indetructable and even when/if they discolour they still work.

Re the Mildmannered's point. Have to admit DS did get quite good at thrusting legs out and arching his back and going flat. We didn't ever leave him alone in it.

But hell if you can get it for 99p. What have you got to lose!

SalLikesCoffee · 22/02/2009 17:29

All my friends used theirs for ages - mine was probably used 3 times, so a complete waste of money in my case! I'd seriously recommend borrowing one for a couple of days first.

my dd1 didnt get on with hers kept pushing herself out backwards, they are very exspensive for the little use they get

KingRolo · 27/02/2009 19:23

My dd won't go in hers at all, just arches her back, flattens out and screams. I don't think she finds it very comfortable at all. I might put mine on ebay come to think of it...

ohdearwhatamess · 27/02/2009 20:55

No point at 6 months, imo. As soon as she can sit up she won't need or want it.

If you are keen to get one can you try her in a friend's Bumbo first to see if she likes it.

With my dcs, ds1 loved the Bumbo, and used it a lot from 4-6 months. Ds2 hated it, arched his back, screamed a lot. I don't think he stayed in it for more than 2 minutes at a time.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 27/02/2009 20:57

If they're skinny they can escape...

TheThoughtPolice · 27/02/2009 20:58

I didn;t have one and none of my kids are harmed as a result

Lilyloo · 27/02/2009 21:04

What about the www.aiop.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=11610jumperoo ?
Slightly different but we got more use of ours got it at 6 mths lasted until 12.
We got it from ebay and paid pretty much what we sold it back on there for.
They go for about £40.00 second hand.

pebbles79 · 27/02/2009 21:31

Get a used one from ebay and sell it on when you're finished. I loved mine for the small time that I used it for but they don't last long.

Made2OrderJelly · 27/02/2009 21:34

They have a good resale value, you wont lose out much, you might want to keep it for next DC though (i have)

Maybe you have a friend who has one but is in between babies?
