I am looking for a mattress for DC2's bed. I have no idea what to look for. There is such a huge range of prices and I am so tempted to get the cheapest as I now its just going to get covered in child sick and wee. On the other hand, they spend so long in bed and do all their growing there that I feel I ought to make sure its fairly good. I also dont want her to sleep badly and start waking me up.

Any tips on what makes a good mattress for a child?

How old is your DC and how long do you want them to use the mattress for? The foam mattresses DD had as a baby developed a permanent dip quite quickly - she's had a sprung one for about 18 months and it's still looking fantastic.

I bought DD a crib mattress from here and was very pleased with it. I talked to them before buying and found them to be very helpful on the pros and cons of different options. They're also very flexible in terms of combining covers with mattresses - they make them all in house so can do whatever you like. If you're worried about it getting messy, you could always get a spare cover made up.

Hope that helps

DC is nearly 2 and I would like the mattress to last as long as possible. With DS, I am working hard to protect his mattress that was given to us by PILs as they had it on their spare room bed and was never used. Its quite a good mattress and I wonder if I ought to get a better quality one for DD too.

It is for a 3ft single bed, so she could potentially be using it for another 15 years.

Thanks for the tips.

It depends on whether you need it for moses basket, crib, cot or cotbed.

Mothercare do really good one with a zip off top cover.

I have the spring interior one with coolmax. It has a zip off top top quilted sheet that washes at 90 degrees and a waterproof layer under that so it stays pretty cean and is really comfy.

If you're hoping it will last over a decade, get the best mattress you can afford and a good cover

If you're looking at a full size mattress that link may not be able to help - but you don't know till you ask and they may have advice even if they can't fill the order.

Happy shopping

I just wonder if its worth getting a cheap one and then in a few years (once she can actually be trusted not to wee on it) buying a better one.

I don't know why I am worrying ... I had a second hand mattress as a kid and I am fine
